Jeffrey served the tankards and started walking back towards the counter, when one of the less steady patrons bumped into him. This caused him to fall near the table the cloaked ones had been sitting at.
"I wouldn't serve him anymore ale if I were you," one of them said, helping him to his feet.
"I'll keep that in mind and-" Jeffry found himself looking into the eyes of the one helping him to his feet. The eyes were reptilian.
"It's only polite to thank those who help you," the person said.
Jeffrey gulped. "Thank you." He stared, and then he looked at the eyes of the others, all ten of them. Their eyes were all different.
"It's rude to stare," one of them said, quietly.
Jeffrey looked at the speaker, who looked right at him. Their eyes seemed human. "What are you? Some kind of monster?"
"The worst monster of them all," the figure said, taking a sip. "I'm human."
"Why would monsters be slayers?" Jeffrey asked, quietly.
"Who better to hunt down a monster, than a monster of the same race?" the reptilian one asked. "I'm surprised that you haven't called out yet, not that it would matter."
"Why wouldn't it matter if I called out?" Jeffrey asked.
"Kitsune magic," said another. "Good for tricking the eyes of most observers, but it can't disguise the eyes of those I try to disguise. Become human-sized, throw on a cloak, and we just claim to be foreigners. As far as anyone is concerned, we're just having a polite conversation, seeing that you are well, and that you didn't hit your head too badly."
"What if I tried to call out afterwards?" Jeffery asked.
"I'd strongly advise against it," the human said. "Or else we'll reveal you to be a fraud."
"What are you talking about?" Jeffery asked.
"You smell of dragon," said a fourth. "Yet, you are not injured, so it suggests that you and he are friends, and perhaps you live on a farm nearby with family, who care for this dragon, and you two pulled a scam to make money for your family. We've seen it before kid."
"So, what are you going to do?" Jeffrey asked, nervously, thinking of Marcus, and his family.
"It is simple," said the human.
