Chapter #5

The Council

    by: Dragonlord Author IconMail Icon
The man walked into a large cave and sat the baby down on a stone pedestal and brushed the child's scaly head.

"You may step away from the child now Rhzvanzin," one of the seven old dragons in the room said.

Rhzvanzin gave a curt nod and took several steps away from the child and turned to face each of the seven dragons considering his odds in the trial for the child. He knew exactly how six of the seven dragons would rule in this case. The dragon in the center of the seven would rule in favor of keeping the child, after all she had adopted Rhzvanzin when he was a child and he was fully human. The dragons at the far right and far left would also rule on keeping the child, they where after all Rhzavanzins two best friends and knew that not ALL humans were bad. Three of the other dragons all carried prejudices against humans and would rule in favor of the child's death, they had already tried to expel Rhzvanzin from the tribe despite what he had done for it. It would be the ruling of the dragon on his mother's left that decided the child's fate.

"This council is now in session," Rhzvanzin's mother, Sivarria, said rapping her knuckles on the floor, "Rhzvanzin what have you requested for the council today?"

"I ask that the child be spared and be alowed to live among us as part of the clan," Rhzvanzin said plainly, "I see it as a possible means of aiding the tribe, possibly even more than I have."

"Why would you believe this?" Sivarria asked.

"Because the child is powerful, as you can all feel, and trained by us it will be loyal to us unto death. And with this child's capability to change its shape, it could infiltrate human settlements and spy or sow the seeds of unrest."

"Bah!" the dragon to Sivarria's right spat, "We already have a small knot of humans doing that for us! Why would we need another?"

"Because with its ability to fly in dragon form," Rhzvanzin said darkly, "We would not have to send one of the tribe to recieve the news from it."

This caused a murmur among the council, this was how the dragon the Bowhan had slain had been caught. The thought of not having to risk another clansman to recieve information about the humans' movements. But this would not be enough to convince the council to let the child live.

"Judging from past experiances we've had around those of human blood," the dragon on Sivarrias right sneered at Rhzvanzin, "this would be a very poor trade off. After all when we brought you into the clan we lost both of our clan-lords to your actions."

"That is a lie and you know it," the dragon on the far right, Zahanort, shouted angrily, "We all know that their death's were caused by their own actions resulting from their hatred of humans. Our other experiances with humans, such as Mira and Sara, have had very benifical results."

"Yes of coarse," the dragon on his right said sarcasticly, "A street full of beggars is all we got from that Mira girl. And while we did get a few years of peace from that Sara girl, it's a shame that her children used the information we had given her to attack us and force us from our home! But you probably overlooked that seeing that they were your children Zahanort!"

Zahanort growled but the dragon at the far right, Drazealite, shouted, "Zahanort drop it! We are here to decide the of this child, not settle an old score."

Zahanort looked resentfully at Drazealite but calmed down nonetheless.

"Thank you Drazealite," Sivarria nodded to him, "I whole-heartiedly agree with you. Nevertheless I believe that we have heard enough to decide. What are the rulings?"

There was three 'kill the child's and three 'let the child live's. All faces turned towards the dragon to Sivarria's left and he sighed saying, "I believe I shall have to go with..."
