Chapter #6

Serpent to the Rescue

by: Bruce Lee Gifford Jr. Author IconMail Icon
The serpent decided that it was best to watch the boy from a safe distance first, and see if he needs help. As the boy swam farther away from the boat, she stayed close to him. Though, she stayed at a deep enough level so that he wouldn't notice her

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----

Francis swam as far away from the boat as he possibly could. He was unaware of the giant serpent swimming under him. He stopped when he thought he was far enough and he began to tread water. He turned to the boat and watched as is sunk beneath the water's surface. It was haunting to see the ship where he spent the last couple of year on just sink to never return to the surface again. Francis didn't see the pirate ship at all and realized that it must be long gone by now.

Francis began to analyze his situation. The was no land in sight, and he had lost a lot of his strength from swimming away from the boat. Francis tried not to panic, but it seemed like it was hopeless. The situation was grave indeed and he was going to drown if a miracle doesn't happen. Luckily, the miracle was right under his feet.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------

The serpent studied the human carefully and thought about his situation. The boy was far from land and there was no boat around that could save him. He was going to surely drown if she didn't save him. She thought about reasons to save him and reasons to let him die.

"Why should I save this human?" she thought to herself, "Humans have been trying to kill me my entire life. Yet, this is a young human and he doesn't look like a hunter. But, if I go up there, he's just going to be frightened of me and he'll just think I'm going to eat him or something. However, if I do help him get to land, he can tell everyone about the serpent that had saved him. It might cause more hunters to search for me, but it might also help people understand that I'm not a monster."

Before the serpent could think about this any farther, she noticed that the boy was struggling to keep from going under. If she was going to save him, she had to do it now. She swam to the surface and made sure that her back was right under the human boy.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------

"Oh God, this is it," Francis said as he struggled to stay up, "I'm going to die."

Suddenly, Francis felt land under his feet. The land under him moved upwards until he and it was above the surface of the water. Francis fell on his butt from the sudden movement. He took a closer look at the ground beneath him and saw that is was green scales. Something else came out of the water. Francis stared at the object and realized that he was gazing up at the head of a sea serpent, and the "land" he was on was its back.
