He pulled out the knife from his belt and turned to face the child. It was even uglier than he had realized.
"I will not shirk my duty," he muttered. "What is my duty in this matter?"
A sudden stench came from the baby. Bowhan knew the smell from his experience with trolls. He realized he had to kill the child. Even if it was human - ish - it wouldn't live a happy life.
Bowhan raised his knife up above the child and braced himself to do the deed. He looked in to the face, trying to focus on the monstrous fangs, greenish, lumpy skin, and malformed nose. He thrust the knife down to the child's heart and... stopped it just in time. The baby's gaze held him back from inflicting the wound and drew him closer. The smell seemed to evaporate. The babie's nose shrank to normal form, his skin grew smooth and white, and his fangs completely disappeared.
"What am I going to do now?" dispaired Bowhan. "I can't kill you, little one. You're so human."
