Vera watched with amusement as her office door opened and her little secretary nervously entered. Heidi wasn't that small. She came up to Vera's knee. It was an oddity of the current system that Vera, as a secretary / PA, was paid a fairly extravagent wage simply because she had to be big enough to be useful to Vera. This was a problem, but life was full of problems...
Vera reclined in her comfy executive chair. "Heidi, how is the Anderson Co-op project coming along?"
Heidi, ever prepared pulled out a huge folder and handed it over. "Miss Mueller? The Co-op has done a lot of good. Do you have to take it over?"
"Yes." Vera scanned the file with pleasure. The Anderson Co-op had been founded decades ago as the legacy of a millionaire philanthropist who had decided to make every other company look bad by overpaying it's workers and paying it's taxes, offering medical care and no end of embarassments. They were a PR headache and Vera had had her eye on them for a long time. Taking over a co-operative was normally difficult, but Anderson had an executive board with power and Mueller International had been pressing the co-op hard, undercutting them so that they couldn't compete, buying up huge blocks of stock and... other methods to ensure that the majority of the board were in Vera's pocket. The Anderson Co-Op was a low hanging fruit which Vera looked forward to devouring.
Vera flicked through the folder. The CEO wanted to talk. "Heidi? When do we take control of Anderson?"
"Wednesday."
"Make an appointment with the CEO at 4am on Wednesday."
"Yes, Miss Mueller."
"Go."
Heidi left and Vera lounged alone in her opulant office. She picked up the newspaper. Good news. It was less than a week before the minimum wage and the size limit restrictions were dropped. Vera was prepared. She's lost some productivity in changing her old factories and offices to the smaller size that would be needed and the fact that people couldn't work in the completed buildings until she'd cut their pay and made them small enough, but it would even out. She was going to have to demolish the old worker housing estates too and replace them with smaller more efficient housing. That could be fun though. She might go along...
