"Dan," Mr. Rickson extended a hand to the young man and shook it firmly. "It's good to see you open to this opportunity. Right now business is booming and while I get some employee issues handled we are short staffed. I think with your help we are about to turn the corner."
"My pleasure, Mr. Rickson." Dan smiled. It was his first time meeting with the boss one to one and Dan's anxiety had gone away with the warm welcome. Mr. Rickson had always seemed so superior and aloof- even unfriendly but today he was smiling and warm.
"Because of the short staffing, I hope you will be flexible. I may need you to pick up the slack wherever until we get fully staffed."
"No problem." Dan answered. "I'll be happy to work whatever you need."
"That's why I offered the promotion, Dan. I think you can be a big help. Sit down."
Mr. Rickson unbuttoned his suit jacket which had been rather tighly stretched over a beginner gut and sat down in his chair. Hs belly pooched forward. jiggling softly as he talked.
"Normally, I'd want someone with your looks in hospitality, making a good first impression on our guests but right now I've got a more pressing problem."
Unconsiously, Mr. Rickson rubbed his belly before continuing.
"We are loosing money hand over fist in the bar. I think somebody is giving away drinks. I fired the bartender and hired a new one but still the revenues are not covereing the expenses. I'd like you to inventory the bar and track revenues against the orders."
After some minutes discussing the task, Mr. Rickson rose and rebuttoned his snug suit jacket.
"I'll do my best." Dan told him.
"I know you will." Mr. Rickson said.
