Brad ordered a striploin as well, then added some appetizers, a bowl of clam chowder and garlic bread. When the waiter delivered their beer, Brad took a healthy drink, settled back in his chair and said.
"So how have you been, Dave? It's been a long time since high school."
Brad was a great listener and Dave was spinning the whole story of his life while Brad listened thoughtfully and ate. Dave ate carefully, cutting away the fat on his steak and ignoring the big baked potato. Brad consumed every morsel of his steak and his butter-drenched potato and was into the second basket of garlic bread when he reached over and stabbed Dave's potato with his fork, giving Dave a wink. Dave paused in his story and nodded then continued while Brad loaded the potato with butter and sour cream and then as an afterthought reached over for the thick slice of crusty fat from Dave's steak and popped it into his mouth. Wiping the grease from his chin Brad smiled contentedly.
Dave couldn't believe how good it felt to see Brad again. He was the same guy, Dave remembered, friendly and caring. It had been so long since Dave could unload about his boring life and job. Finally, Dave reached the end of his unloading. Brad was such a good people person that Dave never realized that he had monopolized the entire evening. They were finishing up desert, apple pie with two scoops of ice cream. Dave looked down with surprise at his plate. He never ate desert. He looked over at Brad who was still intently listening to Dave's story.
Dave suddenly felt guilty. Here he had monopolized the entier evening with complaining about his life. Brad had listened to the whole tirade and seemed genuinely interested in Dave.
Dave stopped.
"Enough about me," Dave told Brad. "Now I want to hear everything that you have done since high school and what is going on for you now."
"fair enough," Brad responded. "But I think they are about to shut this place down and I have a busy schedule tomorrow."
