What was that? You stop and turn around, you pull out Sunrise and run.
Whump!
"Hey! Watch it!"
"Who are you!?"
"Get off!"
You get to your feet again to see a bushy, red squirrel holding a basket.
"Oh now look!" he groans, "What'd you jump me like that for!?"
"Sorry...who are you?"
"Waslin, and who, are you?"
"I'm Vaan," you say. You look at his clothes, "Are you from Redwall?" you ask.
"Yes...Will you put that knife away!? You're giving me the jumps!"
"Sorry".
You put Sunrise away and help Waslin gather up his spilt apples and put them back into the basket.
"I want to go to Redwall, where is it?"
"Follow me!" said Waslin, "It's not far, I was heading back myself when you decided to bowl me over!"
"Sorry!"
You keep walking, the sunlight is bright and warm, but a breeze keeps you from sweating. Finally, the redstone belltower of the abbey looms up through the trees.
"There it is!" Waslin points, "Hello there!"
"Who'sa dhere?"
A tiny squirrel hopped up and down on the walltop, staring over the edge. He was barely tall enough to see over the battlements.
"Nutkin! Tell Skipper to open the gates!"
"Wazzles!"
"Go and get the Skipper!"
A fat, red-haired dibbun squirrel bumped down the steps and ran across the yard. "Skippah!...SKIPPAH!!!!"
"Belay there, matey! What's all this about, then?"
"Wazlin's back!"
You reach the huge front gates, Waslin thumps on the door with a clenched paw. The bars are moved aside and the gates are opened. Waslin walks in with you following him.
"Aaah you got the apples for the pie!" says a hedgehog maid, shuffling over, "And who are you, then?" she asks, looking at you.
"I'm Vaan," you say, "Just a...travelling mouse looking for shelter, I've heard so much about Redwall..."
"Hoy, I'm sure you have, matey!" said Skipper, heaving the doors closed and dropping the bars back into place, "You stick wid young Waslin, he'll show you around!"
"Are you hungry?" Waslin asks.
