Chapter #5

Into the Lion's Den

The temptation was too great for Starglint. A quick sneak attack would cripple the enemy army and hopefully cause the rats to disband and flee. They'd return, but at least that'd give Starglint time to settle down in the fortress. The badger's ebon bladed sword was pulled from his back sheath as he stole his way into the encampment. Several rats and weasels were around a fireplace, drinking up the day's battle, the smell of whiskey strong in the air. Starglint made a mental note to capture their food holds if possible, he could use a good drink.

The badger lord crept up behind the large yurt, carving a slit in the canvas as quietly as he could, checking around him to make sure he wasn't spotted. His heart was pounding in his chest as he peeked inside. The yurt was dark aside from candles being held over a table, all the occupants leaning over it, discussing battle plans. Starglint slowly made the slit wide enough for himself to crawl through, swallowing his breath as to not make a noise. His ears perked to listen.

"We can't keep attacking at the front, it's too well fortified and the bodies of our slain simply are giving them another wall." a scarred weasel muttered, picking his teeth with a stiletto.

"We've looked around this blasted mountain for weeks now, there isn't any other way inside, unless you want to jump into the crater. Maybe you should do that, Toothrot." a fat young rat snarled at the weasel, the latter presumably Toothrot.

"Lieutenants, would you both shut up. Had we some proper siege equipment, we'd be over and done with this already. What we need is a real idea, something that'll work." said an old rat. By the looks, probably the one in charge, especially considering the tall slab of meat that made for an ermine. Both of their backs were to him, and it wouldn't be too hard to take out the boss, though, perhaps it would be more prudent to go after his guard. Starglint did hope to live after this encounter.
