“I saw a valley a few miles back”, you say urgently. “If we land in the valley, the surrounding ridges might shield us from the blows.”
Buck swings the ship around and activates the afterburners. The green jungle flies past below the ship. Reaching the valley, he flies lower and slows to a hover before descending in between the trees.
As the branches and leaves reach up from below, it scratches over the surface of the ship. The ship bucks and shakes as it breaks through the trees.
“Just keep going”, you say to Buck. “We don’t have any other option.
“Bomb run commencing in thirty seconds”, you hear the radio announce.
“Activate all shields”, you command.
“All shields activated”, the computer complies.
Breaking through the final few feet of underbrush, the ship touches down. A moment later you see a bright flash from outside.
“Buckle up everyone”, you say. “This might get nasty.”
From outside, you hear what sounds like a thunderstorm rolling in. Shockwaves shake the trees.
“Sounds like a real shit-storm that’s blowing in”, commando Spengler says.
Ker-whump...Ker-Whump...KER-WHUMP
The ship starts shaking. Panels pop off from the control consoles. Electrical fires erupt and alarms start blaring.
“Shields compromised...” is all you hear the ships’ computer announce before it’s drowned out by the noise.
KER-WHUMP...KER-WHUMP...KERR-WHUUMP
Straining against your seat belt, you are certain the next round will either destroy the ship or flip it over on its roof.
Outside you see waves of leaves, dust and branches bounce of the shields.
At least the shields are still somewhat active, you think to yourself. For what seems like an eternity, it feels like the entire world around you is being torn apart. The shaking and noise gets so bad, you are not certain if you’re still upright, upside down or even alive.
The deafening noise starts getting softer, replaced by a ringing sound in your ears. The shaking gets less, until finally, you hear it getting softer in the distance. Shaking your head and blinking, you focus on the chaos around you. You can see the ship’s computer is still talking by its blinking light, but all you hear is the ringing in your ears.
Smoke fills the cockpit with scattered fires and sparks in various locations. Feeling something wet run down the side off your face, you run your finger over it and look at it. Red blood stains your finger tips and you realize it is coming from your ear.
You see at least two of your crew members are unconscious.
