Olivia dug her shovel into the ground once again, relishing the satisfaction that comes with physical exhaustion. She wiped her forehead relatively clean of sweat with a sleeve, and dug her shovel in again, only to stop as she hit something besides dirt.
It didn’t feel like rock – it was too smooth. She cleared away the dirt on top of it, and picked it up. It was a book.
What kind of person would just bury a book like that? Olivia had no idea, but decided to take a rest as she perused its contents.
Wouldn’t you know it? The pages were all blank. Olivia sighed, when a voice echoed, “See first page.” “Hello?” Olivia yelled. “Who said that?”
“Who said what, Olivia?” asked a passerby. Olivia was something of a celebrity in her neighborhood for being a digging freak.
“Oh… nothing,” Olivia said. It probably wasn’t worth pursuing anyway. She took a look at the first page, and saw these words: “Congratulations on becoming the master of this book! Anything the master writes in these pages becomes reality. ONLY the master can write in this book – any other writers will have their ink sucked into the page unless the master specifically writes their permission into the same page. This book cannot be destroyed except by its current master. It cannot leave the master unless the master dies or relinquishes mastership. Have fun!”
Olivia was at a loss for words. This book… this book was capable of altering reality? She just couldn’t believe it. It was worth a test… but she didn’t have anything to write with on hand. She quickly climbed up the hole with the book in her arms, went home, and borrowed a pencil.
She holed up in her room, sucking on the eraser of the pencil and wondering what to write…
