Chapter #4

Wolfrain City

    by: Unknown
No one expected humans to become the dominant species.

Compared to nearly every other animal, they were so tiny. So feeble. So slow. They lacked the sharp claws of most mammals, and even lacked the raw strength of other primates. They didn’t even have fur! Most of the poor early humans froze during the winters. At first glance, they seemed like an evolutionary dead end. A mistake. But what they lacked in biological advantages, they made up for in sheer ambition. You see, many of the other animals were amused by the seemingly helpless humans, considering them harmless. All the while, the humans fashioned more and more advanced weapons - bows, spears, swords. Under the other animal’s noses, humans constructed civilizations, kingdoms and armies… and when the time was right, they rose up.

Now, thousands of years later, human supremacy is considered the status quo. Where there were once forests, humans built vast cities. For many centuries, they forced the other animals into the farthest, most dangerous reaches of the wilderness, condemning many species to extinction. While the animals tried to fight back, they simply couldn’t match the human’s relentless savagery and tactical expertise in war. Nowadays, however, humans have become considerably more peaceful, allowing animals to live on nature preserves set aside for them, where their way of life would be untouched. Certain societies even allow animals to become full-fledged citizens… such as the City State of Wolfrain.

You see, in this world, animals have some peculiar traits. First off, they’re all roughly twice the size they would be on Earth; for example, a german shepherd would be 4 feet tall, rather than 2. Secondly, they all are roughly on the same level of intellect as humans, and are capable of speech. Lastly, they’re all capable of unhinging their jaws and swallowing things whole with ease, and have the ability to choose whether or not they digest their prey.

That third trait is what originally put animals at odd with humans. You see, due to the fact that they completely lack fur, humans are considered the most delicious of all animals, and their flexible, bipedal forms could fit into stomachs of all sizes. Thus, humans used to live in constant fear of predators, even the ones in nature preserves… at least, until the fateful day synthetic meat was created by some crazy scientist. Since there’s more than enough ‘synthmeat’ to go around, every predator’s appetite has been taken care of, and thus they have no reason to digest humans. Sure, many still swallow humans for fun, but they’re usually legally obligated to let them out afterwards.

Thus, the human and animal citizens of Wolfrain live in tentative harmony. Some people are annoyed by the animals’ constant gluttony, lechery, and gross tendencies, yet other people fit right in among them. Whatever your tastes, this huge, sprawling city is certainly a wild place…

You have the following choices:
