It's downhill all the way, and Alex stumbles and trips down the dune, then across the flats towards the foliage. It's like a long thin oasis stretched out before him, and he wonders why there isn't more here. Maybe the river isn't always flowing? Maybe the trees and bushes only grow at some times of the year.
After over an hour of stumbling from the tall sand dune he reaches the shade, and shortly after the river. Falling to his knees his parched lips plunge into cool, clear water.
"Oh god! Water never tasted so good!" he gasps, rolling on his back a few minutes later. Maybe he over did the drinking a bit there, but he was soo thirsty!
