Chapter #3

A Boy and The Story of Icarus.

    by: Unknown
"Hey Nate, Ever heard of the story of Icarus?" A attractive young woman asks.

"Who's Icarus?" A young guy questions back.

"I guess that's a no... Anyway, Would you like to hear it." She sighs while fiddling with her lab coat a bit.

"Sure lily." Nate responds while spinning carelessly in a chair.

"Okay, Let's start. Icarus was the son of a genius architect, who built a great labyrinth for a king. Inside the labyrinth the king put his grandson, who was a minotaur. He expected the labyrinth to protect his grandson, who was a bloodthirsty beast. It didn't. A hero infiltrated the labyrinth and slew the minotaur, which grieved and infuriated the king. Who took his anger out on the craftsman and his son, Icarus. The king exiled them to a island and ordered they be killed if they were to try to escape. So, Icarus and his father found a loophole to the fact that the king ruled the land and sea. They decided to fly away through the sky. The dad made wax wings for the both of them, though with the wings he gave two rules to Icarus. One, he must stick close to his father. And um... secondly, he cannot fly to high towards the sun or to low towards the sea. Soon, they flew away from the island. But the ability to fly began to give a since of freedom to Icarus that humans should not have. He soon became careless and began towards the sun. His wings began to melt and he began to fall. His father quickly noticed and attempted to save him before her hit the water, but he was to late and got his wings wet in the process and also crashed into the sea. His father washed up on a island, alive. However, Icarus wasn't so lucky. His father grieved for his son's loss, and eventually named the island after Icarus. Um... That's about it." Lily quickly turned and cracked her knuckles, then began typing at astonishing rate into the keyboard. Nate just stared with a pouty look at her.

He quietly asks. "If Icarus's dad mourned the loss of his son... Why did my dad give me to this program and fund it?" Lily freezes in response to the question, then she turns and says. "Nate. In all honesty your father cares more about himself and his stuff." The boy just sighs sadly onto the glass and sits silently in the solid white room, waiting for the next experiment to be done to him.

The silence continues until Lily finally decides to say. "Nate, you are the only reason I'm still alive. Like I've told you before my family sold me to this company... The way it feels to know your family would abandon you is, unrelentingly depressing. I would have taken my own life long ago if I didn't have you with me. Seeing you every day makes me happy. To know even though you were also abandoned... What I'm trying to say is you always take life as it comes. You don't complain about it. You don't cry over it. You act like a normal everyday kid, granted you're trapped in a box and have numerous experiment done to you a day... How do you do it?" She presses a small button and the one-way glass becomes two-way, then stares at him with conflicted and serious eyes. Nate just smiles at her and cheerfully says. "Because, I know that you depend on me and I depend on you."

And with that tears well up Lily's eye's and she begins to cry like a baby. Nate just gets up and tapes on the glass, politely saying. "Lily, come on, we still have to finish testing the experimental serum and the time machine." She stops, looks up and wipes her tears, then nods.

Lily turns towards the command board and pulls a crimson red lever. A couple feet away in the room where Nate is, a strange, neon blue liquid in a vile rises out of the floor on a pedestal. Nate quickly picks it up and says, "Bottoms up." Then he tips the bottle back chugging it.

Nate quickly puts the empty vile back on the pedestal, which quickly sinks into the floor. Lily preps the next portion of the serum test on her keyboard, quietly saying. "For a seventeen year old your a lot braver than me too." A door opens up and a blond beauty walks in, with a small briefcase in hand. She places the briefcase down in front of him and says. "I am clone 66, I will be helping you in this experiment. The serum you just ingested was designed to give you the ability to edit your body and it's functions at will. Of course it will have it's limits, which is why I'm here." She opens the briefcase and pulls out a small egg shaped object, which looks like it's made of solid metal. "This is a solid lead ball, on the inside is a pocket of ice. Your objective is to swallow this whole and digest the lead and only the lead, while neutralizing the metals poison, then cough up the ice in the middle PERFECTLY intact. Am I understood?"

Nate just replies. "I'll try my best." He picks up the egg and realizes it's a lot bigger than previously thought. He gulps, then relaxes. After a second he presses the lead ball against his lips and it slowly begins to disappears into his mouth. The shape of the fist sized ball can be seen sliding down his throat and slowly into his stomach. After a second he spits the ball of ice onto the table and says. "Will that be all?" The woman nods and walks out.

And as soon as the door closes behind her Nate yells. "Get the time machine ready, we don't have much time." Lily blinks in surprise, but listens to what he says. The Machine rises out of the ground and gears up, he walks over to the glass and begins to shakes. As he quakes his curled up fist slowly turns the same color as the lead ball he ate earlier. As soon as the his entire fist is metallic he smashes it into the glass.

Lily just stares in shock as Nate smashes the glass, then runs towards her. Alarms start blaring at almost painful pitches. Even with all the noise he calmly says. "Okay make it go to a time where these people could never get to me, or you. Then force it to go in fifteen seconds." She asks. "What are you doing?" He says with a sarcastic voice. "We're staying here to clean up the glass." Lily blinks as she realizes that he means they're escaping.

As soon as she finishes he picks her up and runs towards the machine and jumps into it. Everything flashes and the machine...
