The dunes rattle with each approaching earthquake, causing landslides at your scale as the giant lifeguard gets closer. You retaliate each of his steps with ones of your own - each time the sand shifts you move to keep on top of it. It could be worse to be buried in the landslide than to be crushed like a bug, or so you assume though for a moment; both seem nasty enough.
The nearest dune gives way almost like an action movie explosion, parting ways to a massive flesh wrecking ball with toes. The force sends you airborne for a moment until the foot meets the ground once more. The wave of sand carries you on top of his foot as it slides straight off to the ground below.
Relieved you're alive, you forget to take into account that the giant's stride isn't finished yet. The foot leaves the ground, leaving you sliding towards the toes. Just before you could fall a second time towards the sand, you grab hold of his little toe and straddle it the best you can muster. Gripping a few hairs and wedging a leg in for safety, you now have a firm ride to carry you along the beach. You chuckle to yourself. Mankind's first encounter on this planet has not ended worse than before and now, one of its inhabitants unknowingly gives you a ride across the beach.
As the foot touches the sand once more, you spot something moving in the horizon - something small and standing. A mirage? Intrigue grips you while the giant decides otherwise, carrying on his stride and taking his foot and you into the air.
Another step gives an opportunity to check the distant object. It looks human, with a spacesuit and everything.
Your heart races. You're not the only one who survived the disaster.
Another step later changes things. You see that he (or she) is having trouble, struggling to get his legs out of the sand. As you get carried with the lifeguard's foot into the air again, you realize that his next step will be on top of him. As the foot carries forward again and the lifeguard continues his walk unknowingly to crush your crewmate, you have only a small amount of time to grab him and pull him to safety just before getting stepped on.
It's this moment or you'll be the only one left...
