Maybe girlfriend isn't the right thing to say. You see, in reality we were just really close friends. We went on a few dates but decided that we were better off staying close friends. All our friends call us the twins because of how long we've been friends and because of how close our birthdays are to each other. In fact, over the years some teachers have just assumed that we were dating. But neither of us could have predicted what happened on that one summer night.
My family was getting ready to go and have a barbecue at my friend Hanna's house when my mom answered the home phone. She seemed to be talking for a while so my dad and I decided to watch some tv in the living room while we waited. "Who do you think that is Kyle?" My dad asked.
"Beats me" I replied.
The two of us continued watching the tv until my mom called dad into the kitchen. The two of them talked for a bit, but I couldn't here what it was about. Eventually, thought, we did leave. But the walk there seemed awkwardness around. Once we arrived my parents went inside to chat with Hanna's parents while I went to the backyard to talk with Hanna. When I walked through the gate I just stood in awe as I looked at my friend. She really was beautiful, with light brown hair that went down to her upper back and the fact that she stayed in perfect shape by playing soccer (a sport I also played). The two of us joked around as Hanna tended to the grill, and just had a good time overall. All of our parents came outside shortly before the meat was ready to come off the grill. As the six of us ate, Hanna and I could feel that something was on our parents minds. Eventually, we spoke up and demanded to know what was bugging them. We could tell they didn't want to, but they said we were almost adults and have the freedom to know. They told us that in one week the public would have access to these places called Body Swap Clinics. And along with the opening of these clinics, a list of all the people used as test subjects over the last 20 years would be released. And apparently, Hanna and I were near the top of that list. Apparently, shortly after the two of us were born both of our parents were approached by some scientists offering to pay them a large sum of money to test an experimental body swap machine. The four of them were hesitant at first, but eventually decided to go for it. One month later, and the swap went off perfectly and our parents were both paid $100,000, which they put in a college account for each of us. They went on to tell us that we would have a week to decide if we want to live the rest of our lives in the bodies we were born in and fill out the forms to get the one time free swap.
"We don't expect you to make a decision now" my mom said. "But it is something that the two of you should think about"
Hanna and I sat there dumbfounded at what we were just told. Not only was body swapping a real thing, but Hanna and I were some of the first people it was tested on. "Would, would I have to live as Hanna the rest of my life?" I asked.
"That's entirely up to the both of you" Hanna's mom replied. "Because this is a government run group they have the ability to adjust all your documents so that you can stay with your current families"
"Well, I guess we have some thinking to do" Hanna said. I nodded my head in agreement, but couldn't say anything. I just couldn't believe that for the last 17 years, I've been living in the wrong body. That I was really supposed to be my best friend and she was supposed to be me.
After dinner, Hanna and I went upstairs to her room while our parents remained outside as they tried to enjoy the rest of their night. "So, what do you think we should do" I asked.
"Well, don't hate me but..." Hanna started before trailing off. "I, I kinda wanna do the swap"
"What!? I, I mean, why?"
"Well, just think about it. Our friends joke that we're really siblings because of how similar we are. And nobody said this had to be permanent. We could just try it out and if we don't feel comfortable we'll just swap back"
"I guess you have a good point there"
While we had pretty much decided that we would at least see what our lives were supposed to be like, we did take a few more days to think it over before telling our parents our choice. Then the fateful day came and the list of everyone who had been swapped was released. Sure enough, the names Kyle Johnson and Hanna Brown were near the top. We proceeded to go to the clinic to file our paperwork to swap back and be given a day when we would wake up in the others body.
We had about a week to teach each other everything we would need to live in our rightful bodies. And before we knew it, the day had come for us to go through with the swap. Our parents had drove us, and we met up in the parking lot before going inside. As we signed the last of the paperwork, the head of the clinic came and introduced himself. While talking to him Hanna mentioned how we were just going to try this out and see how comfortable we are in the others body. He went on to tell us that due to the nature of the early tests, the test subjects bodies could only safely sustain one more swap. To try any more would run the risk of killing one or both subjects. He told us he understands if we wanted to back out knowing this. Hanna and I gave each other a look as we thought about it, and eventually decided to go through with the swap. We had both grown increasingly curious over the course of the past few days. We were then taken to the room where the swap would be preformed. They laid us down on a pair of tables and attached a helmet to each of our heads. The next thing either of us remembers was receiving a shot and being told to count backwards from 100. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
