Chapter #19

Switch with Seth.

Getting from Yumi into another girl's boyfriend isn't going to be as straightforward as getting into Yumi had been. You spend a great deal of thought on possible plans before coming up with something that seems both elegant and possessed of a reasonable chance of success.

It begins early the next morning with a quick exchange of masks at Blackwell's, preparing you for your last morning as Yumi Saito. There follows a quick dash into Wal-Mart, where you buy a very large purse, a big floppy sunhat, an overlarge padded mailer, and a cheap frock. You then make a phone call to Cindy. She takes a bit of convincing, but once she grasps your proposal she is hot for it; half an hour later she calls back excited that she's got it set up. The meeting will be at one o'clock, just after lunch.

You go back to the house, briefly, to pack your new purse with the just-completed blank mask and the padded mailer. At twelve-thirty you hook up with Will at one of the discount clothiers in the strip mall near Larsen's Department Store and slip into one of the dressing rooms with him. He disrobes and you twitch his mask off, revealing the unconscious Yumi. Next to her you deposit her keys, purse and the cheap frock, keeping only her cell phone for yourself; the mask of Will and his clothes you stuff into your new, over-large bag next to the blank mask you are also carrying. You hurry from the stall, out of the store, and down the street toward the mall. You are wearing the sunhat and sunglasses so that the recovered Yumi, even if she makes it out of the store and onto the street while you're exposed, will be less likely to spot and recognize her stolen face.

It is nearly one o'clock when, out of breath, you get into Larsen's, the town's locally owned high-end retailer. You are pleased to see that Cindy and Seth are already there.

"This one will drive him wild," you gasp as you yank one of the tank tops off the rack. Cindy casts a critical eye at it. "Come on, it doesn't matter what you think of it, think of what it will do to him."

"Yeah, but I have to wear it," she grumbles.

"Only once," you grin. "For a few minutes. In this store."

"Oh. Right," she grins back. She takes the skimpy, tacky thing back into the dressing rooms.

"You'll flip when you see this next one," you tell Seth when you return to where he's sitting. He's grinning, and he's got a lot of color in his cheeks—it's been quite a fashion show you two girls have been putting on for him. He's got his legs crossed with his ankle resting on his knee so that you can see the prodigious boner swelling in the crotch of his jeans.

"Are you going to show me something, or is this just Cindy's show?" He winks at you.

"Just hers," you reply with a tight smile. "Though I might try something on later when she's done."

Cindy comes out. The top is extremely revealing—embarrassingly so, and she's blushing a bright red. But Seth opens his mouth with pleasure and softly claps.

"Enjoy it while you can, you pervert," she mutters between gritted teeth. She quickly flees back into the changing room.

"This is really awesome," she tells you afterwards, "but I can't afford any of these things. Even the ones that are more holes than not."

"And I keep telling you this isn't about buying something for the party," you reply. "This is about making him totally bug-eyed over you. What part of 'the way to a boy's heart is by pretending to be a porn actress' don't you understand?" She doesn't answer. "Okay, that was crude, I admit, but—"

"No, I get you. But after awhile it just starts to feel a little, like, demeaning."

It sounds like the opening you've been waiting for. "So give him a taste of his own medicine. Make him try on a few things for you." She giggles. "I'm serious." You look around; the men's clearance rack is only a few rows away, and she follows you over. "Oh, make him try on this!" You pull down a pair of summer trunks made of thin cotton. "Don't get me wrong, but he has great legs."

She giggles again, and bursts out laughing when you pull down a too-small muscle shirt as well. "He'll look totally gay," she snickers.

"Exactly," you reply with a wicked cackle of your own. "But you'll get to see his abs, and boy will he look cute when he's embarrassed."

You linger at a distance, pretending to be absorbed in some more women's clothes, as she takes the items over to Seth. A playful argument ensues, which he naturally loses, and his face is crimson as he slinks to the dressing room. You let him get inside and then squeal excitedly. "While you're taking a break, Cindy, I'm going to try this on!" You take your find and hurry off after Seth.

Larsen's is very chic, so the doors to their stalls go all the way to the top and bottom. You knock softly. "Seth? Cindy has one more thing for you." You take the blank mask from the purse.

He opens the door and you push in past him. "What the—?" is all he has time to say before you leap onto the changing bench and slap the blank mask against his face. He tumbles backwards but lands in a sitting position on the bench.

The rest is quite leisurely. Seth already has his shoes and jeans off; you just have to pull his shirt and underwear and socks off as well. You take off both Yumi's clothes and the mask you've been wearing and stuff them, along with her cell phone, into the padded mailer, which you seal. You also take out Will's clothes and set them aside. By this point the new mask has reappeared on Seth's face; you carefully lift it off and drop Will's mask onto Seth; simultaneously, you put the Seth mask to your face.

Your doppelganger is mostly dressed by the time you wake. "This is totally gay," he snickers.

"You ain't seen nothin' yet," you mutter, and hold up the muscle shirt you'd picked out for Seth. He snorts with suppressed laughter. "I was hoping that'd be your reaction. Sorry, dude, but I didn't tell you about this next part of the plan." You press him against the back of the stall, pin him at the shoulder, and pop him three hard cracks in the eye with your fist.

He howls and falls to the floor.

"Okay, get up and get out. Take this to the clubhouse and hide it there." You hand him the mailer, and he scurries out, bent over and nursing his eye.

You pull Seth's clothes on and exit as quickly as possible. Cindy, looking aghast, is near the door of the dressing rooms. "What happened?" she asks.

"Faggot caught me coming out in those clothes you picked out for me," you mutter. You work your jaw angrily. "If he says anything about to anyone else I'll pop him in the other eye real good too."

Cindy insists on looking for Yumi and then on calling her when she doesn't show up. She grows increasingly frantic at the way she has vanished without a trace. After about an hour of searching all over the mall you suggest calling her house. Yumi is there, and Cindy talks to her. The conversation is disjointed and confusing, and not just because you are only listening to Cindy's side of it.

Your girlfriend is baffled and angry by the time she hangs up: Yumi isn't making a lot of sense and has no explanation for why she suddenly quit the store. You just grunt. "She's a space cadet, that's all. You've told me so yourself."

"No, she's just forgetful and thoughtless," Cindy says. "This is like something Maria would do." She continues to wonder over it for a little while, but eventually puts it out of her mind.

Seth Javits is not quite at the top of the school hierarchy; he is a member of the basketball team and he seems to be on pretty good terms with Gordon Black. He is also jerk and a bully who for several years has tormented your friend Keith. So he represents an almost-pinnacle rather than the pinnacle itself, and you have not convinced yourself that he is your final destination. But for the next week, at least, he is going to be your persona. The question is, what to do in the meantime.

You had the idea of causing a breakup between him and Cindy, a breakup that would involve you passing the enchanted bracelet on to Lucy. You still need to do that. But if you're going to make Seth a semi-permanent home, there is no reason to wreck his romance just yet. You'd have to find another way to put a spy on Lucy.

You have the following choices:

1. Break up with Cindy.

2. Keep Seth's life undisturbed.
