Chapter #38

Co-Ed Play

Before you can make a decision, though, you need to know how Sydney envisions it working out.

"Okay," you say, "suppose we, uh, make it the basketball squad—"

"Boys or girls?"

"Well ... either. That's what I'm asking. Didn't you say we need, like, a mix of guys and girls?"

"Sure." She stirs her finger inside a cup of barbecue sauce, and sucks on it. "What I was assuming, I guess, is that we'd do five on each team. Like, five of the guys on the basketball squad, and five of the girls on the girls' squad. Although—" She cocks her head. "Maybe it would make more sense if it was five on a squad, and then we just find five people who would be a good match for them. Like Gordon Black, he's dating the head cheerleader isn't he?" You nod. "So there. If we pick the boys' basketball squad, then his girlfriend and the girlfriends of the other guys would be the natural ones to add."

"Are there any co-ed teams?" you ask. "Maybe that would be the best way to get, like, a boy-girl mix but all in one place. Is the swim team co-ed?"

"Sort of," Sydney says. She wipes off her fingertips and plucks her cell phone from her pocket. "There really aren't a lot of co-ed teams, not really. Best you can find will be the, um—" She frowns and studies the screen, and taps at it. "Like the swim team. But some of the smaller sports teams, like the tennis and track squads, the boys and girls don't play against each other but they do travel together and meet in the same classes.

"Or, you know," she adds, "instead of taking over a sports team—" She chews on her cheek. "Never mind."

"What?"

"Nothing. We wanted it to be a team. All the people in one place."

"But what were you going to say?"

"Well—" She cocks her head and studies her cell phone. "Instead of taking over a team, or the core of a team, we could just pick up, like, the best people on each team in the school."
