Chapter #64

Slumber Party Switch-Up

by: rugal b. Author IconMail Icon
Laura Serrano. Laura fucking Serrano. Of all people it has to be her? You can feel the disgust immediately begin to boil and bubble within you: Lindsay would sooner ingest razors and cyanide than spend even five minutes with the stuck up and two-faced Queen of All Cunts. Lindsay and Laura had gotten along once upon a time but like any good -- that is non-Disneyfied -- fairy tale that story ended in much bitterness with the heroine left in a more miserable place.

So Little Miss Kelsey Wannabe can have her fancy party but it's one that Lindsay, and thus you, want nothing to do with. You don't even have to say a word. You merely glare and scowl at Paulina for even suggesting the idea and you quickly see her wilt.

"A slumber party sounds good," you say in response to Paulina's mention of the party's location. "After all of this stupid shit with that book and that Prescott doofus," you want to wince at having to slight yourself like that, "it'll be good to hang out again. Who's place though? You know my mom would never let us have it there."

"I don't know," Paulina answers. "If it was just the four of us then my parents probably wouldn't mind but I kind of want to do something bigger."

"Four of us?" asks Bhodi.

"Sorry," Paulina says as she tightly clasps his hand to try and dampen his disappointment, "but this would be a girls only thing."

"What do you mean by 'just' the four of us? How many people were you wanting to invite?" you ask.

"Yeah, how many?" comes Grant's voice as he pulls into a seat next to you. "Wait, what are we talking about?"

"None of your business," you say to him while making a face.

"What's none of our business?" asks Evie this time falling in by Paulina. She's followed closely by Joe, Justin and Andy.

You huff and roll your eyes at that. "It's not something that's none of your business, Evie," you say."It's just nothing that these chucklefucks need to know about."

"I already know about it!" Bhodi chimes in pridefully but you turn Lindsay's usual expression towards him now.

"And you'll keep it to yourself if you know what's good for you," you growl. "Come on," you say to Paulina and Evie as you stand up, "I don't like how this has turned into a public library."

* * * * *

You lead the other two over to a quiet spot clear on the other side of the library. Good, your Lindsay-brain thinks, let them stew. Once you're settled in you turn your attention back to Paulina and press her again about what she meant by that "just the four of us" line. "You mean it wouldn't be just you, me, Evie and Melanie?" you ask.

"What's this all about?" asks Evie.

"Paulina wants to throw a slumber party..."

"Tonight," Paulina jumps in when you trail off. "Just a get together."

"But with more people than just us," you respond. "That's what you meant by that, right?"

"Well, sure, I guess. If we can get a few more people to come."

"Like who?"

You hold Paulina's eye and Paulina holds yours. Both girls, you realize, very strong willed which is why they have a tendency to clash despite being close friends. But Paulina concedes just a little bit. "Maybe Jordan? Kaitlyn?" she says with uncertainty. "I don't know, a few others too? I just thought of it."

"Kaitlyn? You mean Page?" you ask and that feeling returns to the pit of your stomach for Kaitlyn Page is one of Laura's pals.

"No, Fowler," Paulina quickly answers.

"Oh, pfft!" you say dismissively. "You think she'd actually come either?" Kaitlyn Fowler, being a girl of rising popularity in the sophomore class, has naturally earned at a minimum skeptical dismissal from Lindsay.

"Maybe, I dunno. But she's not bad I guess. Not like... well, you know who."

Lindsay's mind tells you that you don't even have to guess to know that for Paulina it's referring to Madison Crawford, her Laura Serrano at least insomuch as someone she actively despises.

"But I'll invite a couple of people and," she looks thoughtful, "you and Evie can each invite people too. Not too many but--"

"Hold up! That's a probably going to be a lot of people and we already know mine and your parents won't allow it," you say to Paulina before turning your attention to Evie. "Would your parents be fine with, I don't know, ten people for a slumber party?"

"Probably not that many," Evie answers but she seems struck by inspiration. "Melanie's would though. They're pretty hands off with her."

"So we can just talk to her after school," says Paulina, "or maybe you can text her today and tell her if she's fine with that."

"Sure, I can do that," replies Evie.

"You think this could be done tonight? It'd be organizing everything on short notice," you tell the both of them. "We should probably get everything organized today and then actually do it tomorrow."

Paulina looks at you but quickly acquiesces. "Yeah, that's probably better. It gives me some time to really think." She then looks from you to Evie. "It gives all of us time to think, actually. About who to invite I mean."

From there the talk of the slumber party dies out as the three of you talk about other things.

The bell rings not that long afterwards and Paulina reminds you and Evie to think about who to invite for the slumber party tomorrow. You head off to Lindsay's first period class as sense of unease at Paulina's slumber party idea begins to form.

invited jordan in 3rd n she agreed
thats 1 u dont need to worry about

You shoot the text off to Paulina whose response is quick and simple: awesum!!!! Almost immediately, however, she then follows it up with another text. u wanna invite sum1 else?

i'm good, you respond.

ok. i nvite kaitlyn n charisma.
evie talked athena
melanie said its cool for her place if she can invite eastman friends.

who?

ella & jenna? said there her besties @ eastman.

u thinks thats 2 many

idk but its mel's house. maybe more not so bad?

The conversation ends after that so you turn off the screen and hand the phone back to Lindsay. "This is a stupid plan, you know," she scolds you.

You'd talked to Jordan Ballard -- one of the girls that Paulina had mentioned wanting to invite -- in third period class her and Lindsay share. Lindsay and Jordan are friends per se (but Jordan's a friendly enough girl) so you'd felt nervous asking her to meet up with you before leaving school saying you wanted to talk to her about a get together you and some friends were planning for tomorrow.

She seemed open to the idea ("Otherwise Laura's would be my weekend party," she'd said while gagging) so you met up with her in the parking lot getting a ride out to the community center with the excuse it'd be held in a little secret area there that you wanted to show her in an attempt to pique her curiosity. The basement door was unlocked and you'd led her down where, when she reached the bottom, Caleb had hit her with a mask.

It wasn't long before you'd traded Lindsay's doughy body and flat, dark hair for Jordan's slimmer one and striking, fiery red hair. Her unfashionable denim jacket for a pink and white windbreaker that Jordan makes work. The three of you had then piled into Caleb's car and were now in front of Lindsay's.

"It's going to be fine," you say as you practically shove her out. "Just get back inside and tell me if anything happens between now and tomorrow evening."

You watch as she begrudgingly heads inside and then you and Caleb begin the drive back to grab Jordan's -- your -- car.

"I think she's right," Caleb says. "You probably should've just stayed under her mask."

"Would you want to wear her face?" you shoot back. "Besides, this whole thing feels off."

"How so?"

"Because Paulina typically isn't the type of girl to want to suddenly have a slumber party," you tell him. "Some of the girls she'd mentioned too... like I don't think she necessarily likes or even talks to Kaitlyn Fowler all that much so why invite her?"

"You think something's going on?" asks Caleb.

"I think she's planning something or maybe," you shift uncomfortably, "maybe one of the boys replaced Paulina? Maybe Bhodi did?"

"I don't think they'd do that and I don't know what Paulina could be planning without the book."

"Yeah, I know," you say, "it's just... I don't know. Something's got me antsy. She has to be doing this for a reason and I want to see what it is. Maybe it's nothing. I hope it's nothing."

"You want my help?"

You look at Caleb and then shrug, telling him that if you need it you'll talk to him about it later. Once you've got Jordan's car you head back to her home where you intend to spend a quiet night indoors, relaxing and getting acquainted with the idea that she might be your new face. Probably you'll have to tell Grant and the others about your move and come up with a story as to why you chose her.

It's as your ruminating all of this just before dinner that a series of texts comes in from Lindsay and give you a chill when you read them. Paulina came over to Lindsay's to hang out after school and when she'd left, the book was gone. Obviously this means Paulina found the (poorly) hidden book in Lindsay's room and lifted it. This also means that she definitely has some kind of plan with this slumber party... but what?

You should probably be fine observing her on your own but Caleb did offer to help. All you'd have to do is get him into one of the other guests before the party. Jordan knows a few of them herself so it'd be tough but you could maybe pull off a swap tonight if you wanted.

You have the following choices:

*Pen*
1. Infiltrate alone

*Pen*
2. Accept Caleb's help

*Pen* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
