Chapter #15Athletic Pursuits by: rugal b. Athletes; you don't even bother to read whatever introduction Deanna's written up for you because there's not much to say on that part. It's the girls who are part of teams. They run, jump, shoot three pointers and kick balls into nets. Some of the most popular and desirable girls in school—your Chelsea Coopers and Catherine Muskovs and Andrea Varnsworths—are on one team or the other, usually as a captain. So if you want to good hub to work from, then an athlete is it.
You quickly move onto the names Deanna has listed and begin to look up both them and her accompanying notes.
The first candidate on the list actually leaves you a little perplexed because she doesn't seem like an athlete at all. She looks rough but you wouldn't say that it's in a haggard way. She's a decent looking girl but she also looks like she doesn't bother with too much make up. Her hair is long and blonde but it seems dyed, not natural, and her eyes are an icy blue with the kind of hard glare. She reminds you a bit of Stephanie Wyatt now that you think about it.
This is going to seem like a weird choice because Vanessa Bailey isn't an athlete; but she used to be! See, this all happened last year so I heard about it through the grapevine. But the story goes that Vanessa was on the girls' JV basketball team and was really good too, but she and Stephanie Wyatt didn't get along at all. A lot of arguing and getting heated and all that. Well one day at practice, it boils over and Vanessa starts a fight with Stephanie, like a real deal one!
And Vanessa got kicked off of the team over it so now she holds a huge grudge against Stephanie. She developed a real big attitude over the whole thing and I've heard that she bullies some of the girls lower on the social ladder now. I think she's still friendly with some of the girls on the team but she got pulled into Victoria Rodriguez's group not long afterwards. Pretty neat, huh?
You don't know if "neat" is the word you'd use but you do find the idea of this girl and Stephanie getting into a catfight interesting. Or maybe it'd be more like a rottweiler versus a lioness. You don't know about becoming someone who's apparently a bit of a bully, lord knows you've dealt with them enough, but connections to Victoria and the basketball team are useful all the same.
The next girl on the list is a friendly-looking blonde. Her skin has a nice, natural tan and she's sturdily built with wide hips. The kind of cornfed girl that looks like she'd be as comfortable driving a tractor as throwing a ball.
As you may or may not know, Maggie Crenshaw is on the softball team and not just on it but she's the captain. So leadership, that's a good quality to have for someone who wants to run things. But she's a fun girl too. Real big personality, the kind that can dominate a room if she didn't watch herself. People like having her around. Very charismatic.
Nothing that Deanna noted is wrong. Leadership and the charisma to go with it are good qualities for what you want to do. You wonder if it'd be a good idea to grab her even if you decide against wearing her face.
The third profile is another blonde though she's much different from either Lacey or Maggie. She lacks the tanning they do and her figure is a little fuller though not in a bad way. She has a pretty face but it's pretty in a very unpretentious way.
The first two was obvious but Nicole Yeager is where I really started trying to think outside the box for you. She's on the girls' lacrosse team but she's not the captain and not a star player. There's prettier girls on the team like Jackie Guzman and Tanya Marconi, so what gives? A lot of people just... seem to like her. She's not going to win a popularity contest but you can see for yourself that she's not lacking for friends. She's had a few boyfriends—and some of them are catches!—and even remains on good terms with them after they break up. So there's... something about her that people like. I guess she's just nice?
Deanna seems to be having a hard time describing Nicole and you can kind of get why but at the same time you think you also get what she's going for. There's something very soothing and comforting about Nicole, from the way she looks to the way she seems to carry herself in pictures. And someone that low key and that effortless? Yeah, she could be a real underrated pick.
The next one to look at is Katrina Schwarz, a harsh looking girl with long sandy hair. She's certainly not unattractive but her gaze and demeanor have a hardness to them... which makes the pictures where she looks looser surprising.
Katrina Schwarz is on the soccer team and oh boy is that a mess that I could write a novel about! The TL;DR is that Hannah Westrick came over from Eastman and immediately fought Anita Nuevo for the captaincy and that totally split the team into pro-Anita and pro-Hannah camps. From what I've gathered, Katrina's in the pro-Hannah camp because she's, like, super serious about the team and thinks that Hannah's a better leader but she doesn't hate Anita or anything like that. I've heard she also works with the JV squad and they like her. She's a serious girl who's dating the not-so-serious Sean Wilcox so try to figure that out!
The soccer team does sound like a mess but you do some more looking around and almost whistle. This Hannah girl is dating Marc Garner, one of the top guys in school. So grabbing a soccer player and one connected to Marc's girlfriend suddenly makes Katrina more enticing.
The last girl on the list is certainly nice to look at. Her most distinguishing feature is her hair, long, brown, kinky and voluminous. She's got a bit of an overbite and when she smiles her cheeks puff out. It makes her look kind of like a squirrel, you think, but that's not a bad thing given that people find squirrels cute.
So, this is Christine Miles and as you can probably tell from her socials she's on the tennis team. She's pretty and popular but there's a caveat: she's a junior. I know you said you wanted seniors but I think she'd be a really good catch. She's on the AP track and she's dating a boy named Zion Barber who's super popular. So popular that he's the junior class president and is like being groomed by Kim to take over for her next year or something. But her reputation seems mixed. Like I said she's popular and she seems to be pretty bright and friendly and all that. But there's a lot of chatter on x2z about how she's actually a huge two-faced bitch who spreads gossip and slander behind everyone's back. No idea what's true and what isn't, that's for you to decide.
Maybe she is and maybe she isn't? You don't know how seriously you should be taking x2z chatter but it's something to keep in mind. And you did want a senior but junior or not, this Christine girl is definitely an attractive option from the information presented.
So you mull over the names and weigh the pros and cons of each one. Every name that Deanna presented to you seems good and you do a lot of thinking on just which person you'd like to be. In the end, you come to a decision and fire off a text to Deanna's phone.
thought it over. i'd like to be... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
