The gryphon didn't know what the human was planing. First, the human didn't seem to want to harm the gryphon, then the human threw the rock at him, and now the human didn't seem too hostile anymore. "What does he want?" the gryphon questioned, "Does he want to be mean to me like the other humans? Is this a trick?"
The gryphon was become scared of the one human that it used to think was it's only possible friend. But now, the human seemed to be like all the other humans. The gryphon kept as much distance from the human he could, yet he was already backed in the corner and if the human got any closer, the gryphon wouldn't be able to stop it or back away. Therefore, the gryphon stretched out is bird-like front paw and dragged the dead deer closer to it. The gryphon avoided anymore eye contact with the human and just ate the deer while still crying from both the pain and the loneliness.

Felix still had troubles believing the gryphon was actually crying even though he was seeing the gryphon cry right in front of him. Felix watched in disbelief as the gryphon ripped into the dead deer all while still sobbing uncontrollably. "Maybe this gryphon really is still a child," Felix thought as he watched, "And if it really is a child, it must be frightened and lonely. I know my first week was scary, but this gryphon must have had it worse. It's constantly being tortured while I was only harmed when I failed to do something right. The gryphon is also living in this dark and dank cell with chains around its neck and back legs. The gryphon must be in a nightmare."
A certain realization came to Felix as he thought about his first weeks in the castle and as he thought about when the gryphon had reached out to him. "What if the gryphon wasn't trying to eat me after all. It must be sad and lonely down here. I'm the only human that comes in here that doesn't hurt it. It might have come up to me because I wasn't hurting it and it wanted comfort from this dark nightmare," Felix thought.
Felix remembered the how lonely he was during his first months as a slave. He was five years old and he had no one to look after him or care about him. Everyone paid little attention to Felix unless he did something wrong in which case he would be punished. Felix had been lonely, he had no friends, no family, nothing except the clothes on his back. He was completely alone and he was still alone. Felix sighed, "The gryphon is just alone and I threw a damn rock at it."
Felix watched the gryphon as it continued to rip the deer apart. Normally, Felix would have been afraid of the massive beast that was ripping a dead animal larger than Felix to shreds. However, due to the gryphon's tears which still continued to stream down its face, Felix felt sorry for the gryphon's predicament. Felix just couldn't leave the gryphon in such a state. Felix took a step forward, but the gryphon noticed it and quickly covered its face with both wings. The gryphon shivered and cried hard, obviously deadly frightened of Felix. "The gryphon's not going to let me near it. I have to think of a different way," Felix thought.
Felix devised a plan and quickly ran back to the bowl of water.

As the gryphon covered his face with his wings, he continued to say in his mind, "Please don't hurt me. Please don't hurt me I just want to go home. I just want Mommy and Daddy and even my sisters and brothers. Please don't hurt me."
To the gryphon's surprise, he heard rushed footfalls heading for the exit. The gryphon peaked from his wing and saw the human hurrying away. The gryphon sighed believing the human was leaving, but the human stopped at the water bowl, picked it up, and began walking to the gryphon once more. Not knowing what the human was planning, the gryphon backed up as close to the wall as possible and eyed the human carefully.

Felix noticed the gryphon back up when he came back with the water and Felix couldn't blame the creature. "It's alright," Felix tried assuring the gryphon, "I'm only giving you the water." Felix had no idea if the gryphon could understand him, but he knew it was possible the gryphon could understand Felix's tone of voice, even dogs could do that. Felix just had to keep a calm and assuring voice and the gryphon would understand. "It's alright," Felix repeated.
Felix held the water bowl as far out in front of him as he could and the gryphon began to slowly edge forward. Felix approached slowly as well and set the bowl on the ground. The gryphon eventually placed its beak in the bowl and began drinking. Felix waited a long moment to try and let the gryphon get used to him, but eventually, he placed his hand on the gryphon's head.
The gryphon felt it and quickly backed away. Felix outstretched both arms and said calmly, "It's alright. I'm not going to hurt you. Please, let me closer."
Choice 1: The gryphon lets Felix come closer and Felix comforts the gryphon. The gryphon knows human language because his father had taught him enough to get buy. However, the gryphon can't speak human because the gryphon has a beak and not a mouth.
Choice 2: The gryphon doesn't understand human and it doesn't let Felix come closer just yet.
