Chapter #4

Finding Elizabeth's address

by: Ana Ravioli Author IconMail Icon
You stroll over and have a look at Elizabeth's 'Employee of the Month' pic. She's been captioned with an uninformative Dymo strip reading "Elizabeth," and doesn't look so apathetic as her goth background would suggest. She's probably one of those perky goths.

You'd hoped for a last name, at least. There's not even a helpful initial after her given name. And the waitress would have been suspicious if you'd asked.

Taking a look around, you see what you'd hoped for. There's a hallway running alongside the kitchen, public restrooms on one side with a back door and scullery entrance at the far end. You close the distance at an innocent pace, then shift into the scullery.

Your luck's still holding. There's a guy washing dishes, but his view of the hallway is blocked by the dishwasher and he can't hear a thing over the blare of his norteƱo. You quickly take another corner, pass a storage room, and find the door to an office. Locked, but not completely closed.

Soon, you're navigating the darkness with an LED penlight and rifling through the payroll records in a fortuitously unlocked file cabinet. Elizabeth's W-4 nearly jumps into your hands.

"Liz Toshishai, Eight Bleak Ct." you mumble, scribbling this info and other items of potential interest down on a scrap of paper. You put the form back, tidy up, and check the area before ducking out. You make sure the office door closes properly this time, mentally thanking the negligent manager. It occurs to you to look for some petty cash in here, but you think you've pushed your luck enough for now.

It's that easy. You step back out into the hallway, stop to wash your hands in the men's room, and pay your bill. You even leave a tip. You're more broke now than when you entered, but you've struck the first link in the chain that will lead you to Chelsey and her friends.

You've still got some pre-dawn hours to work with. You think it over.
