"I WILL ALLOW YOU TO PICK YOUR PARTNERS. YOU GIRLS SEEM TOO OLD AND BEAUTIFUL TO HAVE ME PICK FOR YOU." All around the room, the girls got up, switch seats with one another, and were quickly paired up.
"MIKEY," I turned around, seeing Edna with a question.
"Yeah?"
"WANT TO BE MY PARTNER?"
"Sure."
"COOL." I just met this girl, and she already wants to be paired with me! The class was talking for a while until Ms. Martinez explained the rules.
"OK, CLASS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS LESSON IS TO WORK WITH YOUR PARTNER TO MAKE UP AS MANY WORDS AS YOU CAN WITH THE SCRAMBLE OF WORDS ON THE BOARD." I stared at the board, trying to get ahead of everyone. "FIRST PAIR WHO MAKES UP THE MOST WORDS, GET NO HOMEWORK FOR TWO DAYS." The class started to mumble among themselves. "YOU MAY START...NOW!"
The class was filled with non-stop talking. Edna and me were looking back and forth at the board, gaining another two words each time. I thought of this as a perfect time to get to know her better.
"Edna?"
"YES, MIKEY?" I didn't know what else to say.
"So, um, do you like this school?"
"OH MY GOD, IT'S THE BEST SCHOOL I'VE BEEN TOO! I HAVE SO MANY FRIENDS HERE, AND MOST OF THE TEACHER'S HERE ARE SO NICE."
"I see."
"WHAT ABOUT YOU? DO YOU LIKE IT HERE?"
"So far, so good."
"THAT'S GOOD TO HEAR. HOW MANY FRIENDS YOU'VE MADE SO FAR?"
"None, except you."
"YOU'LL GET MORE. JUST GIVE IT SOME TIME." That made me feel better.
"Thanks. Do you have any best friends?"
"JUST TWO. ONE HAS BEEN MY FRIEND FOR A LONG TIME. THE OTHER I JUST MET THIS YEAR."
"That's alot of years."
"I GUESS SO."
"Yeah." We spend another 3 minutes looking for more words to put in our collection.
"I GOT A QUESTION FOR YOU."
"Shoot."
"WHY ARE YOU IN AN ALL-GIRLS SCHOOL? DOESN'T THAT SEEM A LITTLE OUT OF ORDER."
"I thought so too, but my mom thinks girls are more caring and nicer."
"YOUR MOM SOUNDS LIKE A SMART WOMEN." We both started to laugh. I was starting to like Edna. She was cool, calm, and beautiful.
"OKAY, CLASS." Ms. Martinez got off her stool. "TIME'S UP. LET'S SEE WHO FOUND THE MOST." Edna counted up how many words we made. In a couple of seconds, we all told Ms. Martinez how many words each of us got. We could have one, but another group found more words than us. As soon as that was over, the bell rang. Next class.
I sat on Edna's shoulder as she was walking out of the classroom.
"SO WHERE YOU OFF TO NOW?"
"I think a reading class. You?"
"BIOLOGY."
"Ok." She set me down. We were ready to part ways, until she asked.
"MIKEY?"
"Yeah?"
"I WAS WONDERING IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO COME OVER TO MY HOUSE THIS AFTERNOON?" Of course I wanted to go, but I was feeling real tired, and just wanted to chill at home. My beanbag chair is waiting.
"I don't know.."
"I'LL LET YOU TRY OUT MY NEW BEAN-BAG CHAIR.." I just had to say...
