Dr. Moriarty had Phillip pick up a woman presumably to date and had this woman being his memory source. Phillip would bring the woman to his (and Dr. Moriarty's) house. An appropriate memory would be selected and copied and the woman would go home thinking she had just been out on a date but she couldn't remember exactly what happened. It would then take some time for the memory to be properly formulated to be inserted into James' head. Dr. Moriarty was very careful to go slow. He didn't want to shock Phillip or damage Phillip's brain with something so inconsistent that Phillip would go crazy. Dr. Moriarty didn't use a woman for some perverse sexual reason. Not that Dr. Moriarty wasn't indeed perverse, but he chose her because James dating her was the perfect excuse for Phillip and the woman to be together and it gave an alibi to what they were doing in the missing hours that Dr. Moriarty needed to find and extract the memories.
Phillip who had had his personality altered back to where it wasn't antisocial now that he and Dr. Moriarty had moved in together found a girlfriend as Dr. Moriarty wanted. She was a vivacious girl named Crystal. Crystal was pretty but that didn't matter to Dr. Moriarty any woman would do and if this was the first girl that Phillip found it was OK with him. Phillip and Crystal went out on a conventional date and had a good time. Phillip asked her out again and she agreed. Phillip tried to get Crystal to go back to his house but she wouldn't go there on a second date. When she refused Dr. Moriarty had to use what would be his famous knock-out gas for the first time. Crystal was strapped unconscious into the device and given a command that made it easier to get the girl to the lab, other than that she was unchanged. With this background work done, Dr. Moriarty went about the task of trying to select a memory to remove from Crystal and give to Phillip. After a while Dr. Moriarty selected the best one. It was an obvious choice, Crystal's memory of hers and Phillips first date would be the one extracted. Since this was the first time it took a while to obtain the appropriate memory. The complete memory was copied from Crystal's mind and stored in the device. When it was over Crystal was removed from the lab and awakened. She and Phillip watched a movie as if nothing had happened and then Phillip drove her home.
While the two were out (of the lab as well as out of the house) Dr. Moriarty combed the data that was taken from Crystal's mind. It had to be properly prepared so it only contained the information that Dr. Moriarty wanted. Crystal's preparation for the date and her time after Phillip dropped her off was removed along with any extraneous material during the date such as when Crystal made a call or when to the lady's room. Dr. Moriarty could have included those things but at least for the first test he wanted only the time that Crystal and Phillip were together. It actually took more time to 'crop' the data than to retrieve the memory from Crystal's mind.
When Dr. Moriarty was ready he asked Phillip to enter the device. Phillip always did what Dr. Moriarty asked without question. Phillip didn't even know what the experiment was. Dr. Moriarty sometimes told Phillip but in this case he thought it would be best if Phillip didn't know. After the memories were entered into Phillip's mind replacing his own memories of the event Dr. Moriarty didn't even bring it up. He first wanted to see if anything was different with Phillip. After a couple of days there wasn't any discernible difference in Phillip. So finally Dr. Moriarty asked Phillip about his first date with Crystal. Phillip said it was really nice and that he had had allot of fun. That he knew within the first ten minutes of the date when the door was held open for him that there would be another date. The entire date was told from Crystal's perspective but yet Phillip was telling it. Somehow Phillips mind had manipulated how Phillip saw it so that it made sense at all although if you picked it apart some things didn't make sense, such as he was impressed by the car they drove in, but Phillip had picked Crystal up in his car. The all the doors were held for him and the waiter had even pulled the chair out for him. That he did all the talking even though Crystal was supposed to be the vivacious one and Phillip was more reserved. But all of this made sense to Phillip.
