Heading downstairs, she pointed it at her sister. It read:
Name: Rachael Kay Richards
Height: 4' 2''
Physical Birthday: September 2, 1995
Mental Birthday: September 2, 1997
Bra Size: A
Shoe Size: 14
That threw her for a loop. Apparently, her sister was mentally younger than she was physically. That exposed a whole range of questions she didn't want to deal with. Without a second thought, she changed the Mental Birthday entry to match the Physical Birthday one.
For the rest of the morning, Michelle watched her sister to see what differences were there. Was that bit of politeness always there, or was that her acting more mature? Was the fact that she spent more time getting ready today because she was more mature about the way she looked, or was it all just imagined? Michelle never did figure it out, because it was soon time for school.
As she got on the bus and sat down, Michelle wondered exactly where the device had come from. Was it a gift from some higher spirit? Was she the benefactor of some strange mad scientist?
"Liz?"
Were there aliens out there that decided to give her the device? And if so, why her?
"Liz? Liz, you listening?"
Or was this something more sinister? Did some sort of Terminator-esque robot come back in time to give it to her in a plot to have her change history? (Never let it be said that Michelle didn't have a good imagination.)
"Hey, Liz! Are you in there?" Michelle was prodded out of her thoughts by her best friend, poking her in the side of the head. Still on her 'how did I get the device' train of thought, she could say only one thing.
"Wha...?"
Her best friend shook her head. "Come on, Liz. Snap out of it. I've been calling you for the past two minutes."
Michelle sighed. "I'm sorry, Stacy. I've just had some strange things happen to me today."
"Do these 'strange things' have anything to do with that PDA you have in your hand?" asked Stacy.
Michelle looked down. She was still holding the device. Apparently in her rush to get out the door, she had neglected to put it down. She looked around carefully. No one seemed to be listening. "Actually," she started, "they kinda do. It was hidden among my birthday gifts this morning, and it is... well, itseemstobeamagicpersonchangingdevice."
Stacy blinked. "Um... could you please repeat that last part? I didn't quite catch that last part."
"It... seems to be a magic person-changing device."
"Yeah, Liz," said Stacy incredulously, "why don't you pull the other one?"
Michelle shook her head. "Stacy, I'm telling the truth. Look, I'll show you!"
Michelle looked around at who was sitting close. She needed to change someone who wouldn't be noticed. She finally settled on...
