Damn. Trying to pursue the merchant to cheaper prices was obviously non-functioning. He should have known that the most famous lance seller wouldn't be able to be haggled with easily.
"Well if you want to be a fine cavalier or paladin one day you'll most definitely need a good killer lance." The traveling merchant was talking again. "All the famous ones did anyway. I even sold a nice one to your friend the other day. A real good killer lance too, the head was dipped in the most vile of poisons."
The "friend" that the man was talking about was Sain. Kent had been astonished when his companion brought back the fine weapon, grinning from ear to ear. Somehow Sain's people skills and high charisma had worked on the merchant ; he had sold it to him for a merely 100 coins. And yet here Kent was being offered a deal of 5000 coins, enough gold to buy himself a promotional crest.
"Look sir." Kent was polite but it had been clear for the past hour or so, his people skills were not very exceptional. "I really believe you can offer a much better price." He cringed at himself once again begging the old man to lower his prices to at least 2000 coins (that was all he was able to take - the party was low on fighters and weaponry and there had been few rewards from villages in the past few weeks).
The merchant sighed, for he too was tired of all this haggling and arguing over something so casual. "Tell you what young man. You like a promising paladin. I will give the weapon as a gift to you, for free." Kent could hardly believe his ears. He was about to utter a thank you when he was interrupted. "Now don't go getting all happy and such. There is a catch. I will donate the fine weapon to you if you can take this off my hands."
The merchant took out a small triangular bottle with purple liquid inside. The cap was a green cork held onto the bottle by a black ribbon. "Now this thing was given to me by a druid to the north. However it vexes me so. I despise the presence of it in my shop. Please, if you are willing to take this accursed potion off my hands, I will gladly give you the item."
Kent frowned a bit. "Is the drink poisonous?"
The old man shook his head, "Oh no no. The druid promised me the potion does no harm to anyone. However I dislike magical items very much. but still the potion has brought me much curiosity. If you drink the potion I will not only give you the lance but also a bonus of 5000 coins."
Kent was chocked. The lance AND 5000 coins. That would have filled the group treasury high. It would make Sain jealous when he realized Kent had achieved so much over at the lance seller's. This was an offer he could not refuse. "I'll do it!" Was the eager reply.
The merchant's face lite up. "Good good! Here you go!" He held out the potion towards the young man, not wanting it in his presence.
Kent slowly accepted the item but was not hesitant to pop off the cork and allow the sweet liquid to pour into his mouth and stomach. Smiling Kent then held up the empty bottle. "Tada! Now if you will allow me..."
The merchant waved his hand. "Go ahead." and Kent raced forward and accepted his reward. He almost ran back to camp. Wait till the others see this!
