Chapter #4

One last paycheck...

by: evil dude Author IconMail Icon
Betty looked down at the check in her hands and a weak smile slowly spread across her face. She had been working in this underpaying hellhole for far too long, letting them keep her last paycheck would be a crime against human decency. Sure, there were zombies running around and she probably wouldn't get a chance to use it, but it was the principle of the matter. The diner had been on her way to her destination anyway, and she couldn't bother to pass it up. She had managed to get out of her house safely and was headed in the direction of a safe spot where she would be meeting up with other survivors. Hopefully, well armed and friendly, not that she was in a position to be bargaining. She stuffed the tiny piece of paper into the pocket of her jeans and left the diner, eager to get back together with some humans who were still living. She turned around a street corner and hid behind an abandoned car as a shuffling zombie walked by slowly. She had no weapons, if one of these things caught her before she got to the other survivors she was as good as dead.

She got back up and continued running once she was no longer able to hear nearby footsteps and resumed her perilous journey. Up ahead was the abandoned factory where a passing survivor had told her to go two days ago when she was still hiding out in her house. "I wonder if he made it..." Betty said softly as she climbed over a torn down chain-link fence that looked as if something had clawed its way through it. Betty felt a chill run down her spine as she stepped over it and quickly ran up to the side of the building. Inside see could hear footsteps, people were here! She walked over to the back door and looked inside the broken window. There was some shattered glass on the floor inside along with a (possibly locked) door and a rickey looking stairway that led to the upper floor. Betty took a deep breath and went inside...
