Perception

"It's almost time to go to bed. Get your pyjamas on. You've got ten minutes before the lights go out."

As Julie's announcement ringed through the halls down to their bedroom, the twins suddenly jumped off their beds and sprang into action. Jack and Helen dashed to the closet and pulled out a pair of footed sleepers each. Jack was the first to take off his clothes to neatly fold them, remembering exactly like how mom taught him, he pulled off his t-shirt and folded it by the middle and rested it on his desk for tomorrow morning's laundry run. His blue running shorts and red socks shortly followed. Leaving him in his underwear.

Helen was noticeably slower than her brother, by the time Jack had dipped his feet into his sleeper, Helen had begun to pull down her skirt and socks. She tossed the clothing aside and quickly dipped her feet in the pink sleeper in a mad dash to get dressed in time. She pulled the sleeper up to her chest and reached round for the zipper, pulling it up to the very top.

Proud of their handiwork, the twins looked at each other and gave themselves a victorious nod.

"Jack, Helen," Julie's voice started to become louder with each passing second. "Times up!"

Julie entered the bedroom, her presence immediately caught the twins attention. They watched as their mother stepped into the room. The bedroom door closed behind her and she looked down at her two children. The smile on her face quickly faded when she noticed several articles of clothing lazily thrown on the floor.

"Helen," Julie's tone of voice lowered, almost turning into a scold. "What have I told you about leaving your clothes on the floor?"

Helen swallowed the lump in her throat. She watched her mother pick up the dirty clothes and neatly fold them together.

"I've told you a million times. You fold your clothes and leave them on the desk when it's time to do the laundry tomorrow." Julie walked over to the bedroom desk and set them down next to her brother's clothes.

"I'm sorry." Helen squeaked, eyeing the floor instead of her mother.

"It's okay," Julie turned her frown into a light smile. "Get into bed and we'll talk about this tomorrow. I knew I shouldn't have let Robert teach you how to fold your clothes."

The twins exchanged looks at each other before waddling over to their beds. They hopped on the mattress and dug their legs under the blanket. Julie finished their work off by pulling the blanket over their bodies and giving them a light kiss on their forehead.

"Do any of you have to go to the bathroom before you go to sleep?" Julie asked.

"No." Jack and Helen responded, burrowing into their blankets.

"Good," Julie smirked. "If I see any of you in the hallways once the lights go out, you won't be allowed to read your comics." And with that, Julie turned out the lights and left the room, closing the door behind her. The twins silently rested in their beds, only having the moonlight outside to brighten their room.

"That's not fair...," Helen whispered, catching her brothers attention. "I put my pyjamas on by myself. Daddy said, I was a big girl when I do that by myself."

"It's okay," Jack lifted his head off his pillow and looked at his sister. "I can teach you how to fold your clothes, then you'll be an ever bigger girl!"

As Jack looked at his sister across the room, he looked out of the bedroom window for a split second. A bright light caught his eye during his quick gaze at the world outside. He kicked his blanket off his body and hopped off the bed, walking to the window.

"Jack," Helen whispered. "What's wrong? You'll get in trouble if mommy finds out out of your bed."

"It's only for a second!" Jack hushed. "I think there's a shooting star outside."

"A what?" Helen's curiosity got the best of her. She hopped out of her bed and waddled over to her brother. Her glance outside was quickly fixed on the same bright light Jack had spotted.

"A shooting star!" Jack replied, pointing at the bright anomaly. "It's a shooting star!"

"What's a shooting star?" Helen blinked, rubbing her eyes at the brightness of the object in the dark sky.

"I don't know." Jack shrugged.

"Do you think it's an astronaut?" Helen asked.

"What's an astronaut doing in the sky?" Jack looked at his sister.

"They're supposed to be in the sky, silly." Helen frowned.

"I didn't know astronaut's were so bright." Jack looked back outside.

Before the twins could continue with their conversation. The beam of light shone directly into the twins eyes, effectively blinding them for a couple of seconds. From outside, a loud bang could be heard.

"Ugh," Helen whimpered. "It's too bright!"

"But look!" Jack rubbed his eyes. "It's gone!"

Much to Helen's surprise, the mysterious object in the sky had disappeared. Not a single trace of the bright light was left.

"Where did it go?" Helen rubbed her eyes.

"I don't know." Jack leaned closer to the window, trying to get a final look at the outside world.

"That's spooky." Helen commented.

"Oh well," Jack sighed, shrugging his shoulders in confusion. "It must've disappeared."

"Let's get back into bed before mommy finds out." Helen waddled back over to her bed, climbing under her blanket.

"Good idea." Jack did the same as his sister and climbed back into bed.

A few minutes passed and their memories of the bright light dimmed as they fell in and out of conciousness. Their eyelids began to droop and they entered dreamland. Unbeknownst to the twins, their thumbs had slipped into their mouths and a strange aura of energy passed through their bodies.
