pikachu becomes a tree because he grabs it first

But Ash was too slow as Pikachu had aleady dashed over to pick it up himself, perhaps to save Ash the effort of doing so. Yet as he picked it up, he began to light up in much the same way as Dawn did a day or two ago. His feet became roots which planted themselves in the ground, firmly locking the mouse Pokemon in place. His arms began to stiffen and become healthy looking wood, as did the rest of his body. His arms were forced outward - causing him to drop the stone - and began to grow leaves all over them as his hands turned into the branches that the leaves would reside on. His face practically melted into his trunk-like body, and he began to grow taller until he was slightly taller than his trainer, and about the same size as Dawn in her tree form.

"Pikachu! What's happening?" Ash cried in mourning of his partner Pokemon. Pikachu wanted to shout to his trainer, but the fact that he had no face prevented him from doing so. Pikachu was now a tree, just as Dawn was.
