Chapter #7

The boy of ancient ice.

    by: Thornton Author IconMail Icon
Cold. Cosmos. Lonely. These are the words that rush through mind of I, Thornton Fall. I have been frozen for hundreds of years, aware but not aging. I come from Earth in 2014. And this whole ordeal happened in a single, simple month.

I was assigned to study Arctic cellular life as I have already graduated from Yale with flying colors. One day, I was enthralled with a mutated strain of single-cell bacteria. Unfortunately, I fell in, freezing in a matter of a day. Frozen with me were only a few things: my white shirt, blue jeans, black shoes, thermal coat, black shoes, glasses, and weather goggles made up my sub-zero wardrobe; my iPod, filled with upgrades, music, and photos; a specially forged gauntlet with talons to pick up ice samples without contaminating it that can be sheathed, launched, and recalled via magnetism, now being bonded to my body due to extreme temperatures; a foldable gun on a sliding rail, an idea I got from a movie, also bonded to my body; secret stashes of wine and scotch for my weddings and science ceremonies; the samples I collected along with my research notes; and finally my grade-A root beer with a STRONG kick to it that only I ever had the guts to drink. But now, I rest, trapped. Trapped in my comet jail.

I don't know exactly how long it has been but I can tell you one thing for certain: the universe is beautiful. I've seen supernova, intricate nebulas unfold in front of me, passed the Voyager I, seen raging stars and luscious planets. I've orbited Cygnus X-1, rode the magnetic waves of a pulsar, and gazed upon the dying glory of Canis X-Y Majoris. And I even saw two galaxies, not ours or Andromeda of course, begin a fast dance. I cannot describe it, for all I can say I shed a crystal tear. It was that glorious.

Wait, what is that on the horizon. It's, a planet with lights! The dark side has lights shining brilliantly from this view. Finally, I've reached civilization! And at that, my "ship" starts to yearn and pitch, moving closer towards this Earth-like planet. It's bigger than home, with much variety just like back on the 'ol blue marble. I soon enter the atmosphere, the ice starting to shake. However it soon rolls forward, causing the air to slip beneath me so no blaze can form, while simultaneously keeping me aloft and slowing my descent. Now I can make out cities, and boy are they big. One in particular has a mass of people in its center, celebrating som kind of event. Now my trajectory is clear. I'm going to be landing in...
