Kayla suddenly began to feel frightened and worried. She looks to the younger boy for answers. She guessed Donnie was around 10 or 11, short brown hair and appeared to have been playing in the dirt a little. He seemed friendly enough at least.
"This town is cursed on Halloween," Donnie explained. "It starts with the adults, then it spreads-"
But the boy stopped mid-sentence. He pulled out a slingshot, loading it with a rock. As he had predicted, a small mob of zombies with shoes on their hands and feet appeared seemingly out of nowhere and stumbled their way over to them.
"We have to go," Donnie announced, pulling Kayla along swiftly. Though Donnie was a bit shorter, he was quite fast and Kayla had difficulty keeping up in her flats. The zombies, however, were unable to keep up and within seconds were out of sight. Donnie continued to lead her down an alleyway. He stopped in front of a raised ladder.
"Ugh, I'm not wearing the right kind of shoes for this," Kayla groaned, nursing her aching heel.
"You'll be safe up here," Donnie replied. He whistled three times, then a hand unlocked the ladder and it came down immediately. "Ladies first," Donnie offered, with a courteous bow."
"You are just too kind sir," Kayla curtsied and then made her way up the ladder. A platform and open door awaited her at the top, and she could see the figure of another woman inside.
"It's ok, we're friendly," the a girl around Kayla's age said.
"Yeah, I saved them too," Donnie said as he climbed up.
"Them?" Kayla questioned, but got her answer as she walked into a small room full of teenage and twenty-something year old women. Some were in costume, most in their street clothes. All gave who looked at Kayla gave her a friendly, understand smile.
"So what's the curse?" Kayla asked again.
Donnie took a seat in an old recliner in the corner of the room, placing his slingshot on an adjacent coffee table as a girl gave his a Sprite can to drink.
"Most of the males older than 13 develop a craving for feet they can't overcome," Donnie explained. "On Halloween night, the town shuts down and the guys go crazy until sunrise. It's become such a big part of the town that people have come to basically accept it. Plus, we don't know what causes it, so it's kinda hard to do anything about it honestly..."
Kayla couldn't believe what she was hearing, but obviously it was true. "And the zombies?"
"Zombies, animals, you name it," the girl who served Donnie said. She had sad green eyes, accentuated by freckles and ginger locks. Her dark jacket and yoga pants looked ripped and she wore running shoes that didn't really match her outfit, suggesting she'd slipped them on quickly.
Kayla knew she had to get out of here. This was all too much for her.
