Deep underground, in the vast rivers of lifestream that traversed the planet of Gaia, a weak eddy in the flow initiated the crystallation of a portion of energy into a small crystal. Over the course of many years, this crystal grew to become a chunk of materia that travelled on the rivers of life energy, until eventually bursting to the surface on a fountain of mako energy high on a mountain top.
It lay on the edge of the fountain for a while, until by chance a curious bird picked it up in it's talons and took to the air. The bird flew over the countryside, carrying the materia with it, until eventually the creature's thoughts turned to food. The image of a fat, juicy worm formed in it's bird brain.
The bird transformed suddenly, sending the materia and a very confused worm plummeting to the ground. The materia landed with a thud, rolled a little through the grass, and came to a safe stop. A hand reached down and picked it up.
