How about this:
Instead of being put into teams of three, genin are put into a team of one male and one female. A connection is made between the two. One becomes a tank, absorbing muscle, size, and general physical prowess from his/her partner; while the other absorbs all of the aptitude for strategy, book knowledge, chakra capacity and control, becoming a caster.
