It was your first time visiting the property after the purchase, and Carrie had offered to tag along. It had seemed friendly of her.
You should have guessed she was only there to feed her violent, tomboyish tendencies. And you shouldn't have left her alone with the equipment while you popped upstairs to look around. There is a very loud, dry thud from downstairs, and the old house shudders.
Plaster dust is thick in the air by the time you race back to the entrance hall. You're too late; a large section of wall has already been knocked down. Carrie, covered in white dust, admires her handiwork proudly with hammer in hand.
"That wall had to go," Carrie explains, noting your anguished expression. "It was bad for the feng shui." She waves aside the clouds of dust and peers closer at the hole she's made in your new house. "Hey, there's something behind here." Without further adieu, she climbs through. Grabbing a torch, you followed.
She's right. Behind the wall is a flight of stone steps leading down into a cellar. A workbench rans along the walls, heaped with rusty, cracked scientific implements. But one thing still seemes to be in working order. It looks like an old cast-iron oven but larger, filling an entire wall and with a door large enough to allow an adult inside. It is supplied by a web of pipes and wires. The torch beam runs over letters printed into the side of the vast appliance.
TRANSFIGURATOR
As you approach, it whirs into life. The door swing open on motorized hinges and a screen next to it lights up, displaying a single command.
'Please insert subject.'
"What is it?" Carrie whispers.
"'Transfigurator'? Sounds like an early transformation device. Maybe a prototype?"
"Didn't those things get banned?"
"They didn't even make it to the store shelves. They were all destroyed, blueprints included. Mad dangerous."
At the words 'mad dangerous', Carrie's eyes light up in wonder.
