"Good news, Carina. We have decided to let you join our sorority." Paulina, the president smiled at me. I positively beamed. One of the most sought-after sororities and I would be a member.
"Thank you, Paulina!" I jumped at her and embraced her. Paulina gently untangled herself from my arms.
"Whoaaaa, slowly, Carina. There is a little hitch yet and I am sure you know that. You have to prove your dedication first."
I nodded eagerly.
"Oh yes, anything you say."
The girls around the room grinned.
"Right then, are you ready to take the test right now, Carina?" Paulina asked.
"Of course. The sooner the better."
"Good. Now the way we do this here is quite easy actually. We currently have 48 members of whom 42 are present. I have asked each of the members to submit a task for you. The tasks have been written on slips of paper and put in this vase. You will have to complete 3 tasks and you even get a choice. You draw 3 slips and it is up to you which of the 3 tasks you want to fulfill. Once the first task is completed, you draw 3 more and I guess you can fill in the rest. But I have to warn you. You must fulfill one of the three tasks you draw and three tasks in all. Otherwise you fail and will not be admitted. Is that clear?"
I was getting I little nervous now. Looking around the room I saw some girls grinning in anticipation. Somewhere at the back I made out Kirsten. She had been a year ahead of me in HS and we had never got along. If I drew her task it would certainly be a difficult one. I took a deep breath.
"Yes, it's all clear. When do I start?"
Paulina smiled at my eagerness.
"Here's the vase. Help yourself to three tasks."
I dug my hand down the narrow neck of the vase, grabbed 3 slips at random and held them out.
"Read them aloud, then hand them to me and make your choice"
When I unfolded the slips I blanched, but tried to read them out in a firm voice.
- Strip to your undies and serve every member a drink.
- Fetch the paddle and politely ask a member to deliver 25 strokes
- Get down on hands and knees, crawl to each member in turn and apologize for keeping them here all evening
