Chapter #3Unexpected Discovery by: Unknown My name is Travis Greenway, or "Splice" to my friends. Why such the unusual nickname? Well, I'll explain that later. I'm fourteen years old and stand at an impressive 6 ft tall, weighing in around 200lbs, all muscle, not bad, eh? But, that's not why I'm a 'Problem Child'. Now, the reason I'm called Splice is because of my 'abilities.' I can't seem to help it, but some weird traits of mine people refer to some animals. It all started when I got in this fight my first year in Middle School. I stood up for a new friend of mine that was being bullied. Long story short, I won easily. And that was when I was a short kid! The bully was twice my size! But, some people pointed out a few things about me during the fight.
One major thing was my body in general. I was punched several times in the chest, but I didn't feel a thing. Most kids survived with a few broken ribs, but I survived completely! They said I had like a turtle shell for a body. The next few reflected my battling style. Apparently, I was as flexible as a snake, fought like a lion and other large cats, appeared to be flying, and many other qualities. So, after that day, I was known as Splice. Tell you the truth, I enjoyed it. But, about a month later, things started to get weird. I was able to swim very well in the public pool. Not weird, try for about three hours underwater without even taking a breath! The weirdest part was that I never even noticed. My parents were worried so they decided to give me my check up early.
=============
"I HAVE A WHAT?!"
My mom (Crystal) brought me in for the usual check up. Well, let's face it, its not every day you find a six foot teenager. Only, after a few routine tests, the results appeared....different. So, they recommended a full run of scans including a cat-scan and an MRI. The weird part was that they performed these tests three times. At first I thought was because of a mistake. They were reading over every one; each result was the same. Later on, we were taken to a private office where Dr Plak had a word with us. Now, despite his name, Dr. Plak is a very nice man. Somewhere in his thirties, he took the average appearance of any man. Black hair, brown eyes, six foot height; yep, completely average.
"What I'm about to say is not an error, Mr. Greenway." said Dr. Plak. "It shows on your results that you have developed two unrecognizable organs. It also shows your windpipe has split into three different tubes; one the normal way but one leading to each side of your neck. We don't have much information on what these are, but we're looking into it. For all intents and purposes, your body has mutated. Normally, extra vital organs cause problems as there is only so much room in one's body. However, this rare case seems to be helpful to you, time will tell but we need you to come back for more tests."
I just shrugged and walked out of his office. As we were leaving, I turned to him. "Dr. Plak, I know it's strange but can you not tell my mother?" I asked. "She worried about me too much and I don't want her to fret even more."
"This will be our secret then" he replied with a wink. "But just in case..." He handed me his business card. "Call me if anything strange happens and I'll call you if anything else strange shows up."
I nodded and tucked the card into my back pocket. We met with mom and Dr Plak told her everything was normal. This surprised me as Dr Plak never lied to mom before. Usually mom can tell when someone's lying but she believed him just fine. It was already an exhausting day and this made it even stranger. By the time we got home I just fell asleep. I don't know why or how, but I slept till my usual time in the morning, 6:20 am. I nearly had a twelve hour sleep. It was a Saturday, thank god, so I didn't need to be anywhere. But that doesn't give the excuse not to do anything. I got up, grabbed a clean pair of clothes, and headed for the shower. Once inside, I placed my clothes on the counter and started to undress. As I was doing that, I thought I saw something in the mirror. I finished taking off my shirt and looked at my reflection. What I saw made me scream. I saw... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
