Different wager

by: Scifiwizard Retired Author IconMail Icon
As Mel laughed, you came to a decision and grinned, folding your arms. "I have a much more interesting wager in mind." you said, smiling. "That is, if you girls actually think you can beat me."

Hayley, knowing you knew nothing of her magic, grinned back. "What do you suggest?" she asked.

"If I win, you tell me what you had been doing." you said. "If you win, I'll tell you 'my' secret!"

"Get out!" said Mel, laughing. "You don't have any secrets!"

You laughed back. "That just proves how well I can 'keep' a secret, Mel!" you said. "So far, mom is the only other family member who knows." you laughed again. "You should have seen her face when I showed her!"

Unknown to your sisters, you had a special book of your own, given to you by your uncle Jack one year ago, shortly after Hayley had left. At the time, you secretly blamed yourself for it happening. You did not fully understand then what Uncle Jack meant when he spoke to you about it.

"Things happen for a reason, John." he said. "That is why I am passing this book on to you."

"What is it?" you asked him, curious.

"Something I had studied and mastered over my long life." Jack replied. He then pointed to you serious. "You must not tell ANY ONE about that book, especially not your mother."

"Why?"

"Things happen for a reason." repeated Jack. "Study and practice the science well. Mark my words, John, it will, someday, save your family."

When you first opened the book, you found instructions to a hidden door in the basement and how to open it. Beyond the door, you found a secret room that extended out, under the back yard. It was already fully equipped with everything any scientist could want, including libraries of books on the subject of Chaotic Science. He could only guess then that it had all been somehow set up by Uncle Jack. Sadly, he passed away only a few days after giving you the book and you took his instructions as his final wish and began to study the curios book inside the secret room.

As time passed, you began to practice and soon love the forbidden sciences. You understood then why you could not tell your family, your mother would have forbid you to study the science any further. You were not about to allow that to happen. Volunteering to do all of the family's laundry after school was a brilliant plan in your mind to practice your science without arousing any suspicion. In the year that passed since then, you had become quite talented and, thanks to a few successful experiments, highly intelligent. Only that had a down side as well. School became too easy for you and a real pain to endure as you could literally teach the teacher. Fortunately, at home, you found that just being yourself kept any suspicions from rising. Only, just last week, you felt as if you could no longer keep your powers a secret as they were growing strong. Therefore, you decided to show mom everything.

All she could say, when you revealed your secret, and your laboratory, was, "Oh, Jack, you didn't!"

She then explained the family secret to you and the fact that Jack had 'broke the law' passing his knowledge on to you, regardless of his intentions. However, after a lengthy conversation with a woman named Elvira Strange, the witch council decided to allow you to keep your science so long as you obeyed every witch law as if it were magic. You agreed but Elvira's words still haunted you. "The instant you 'cross the line' with your science, I will strip you of your power and make you a witch! It is nothing personal, John, it is just the way it must be!"

"I don't believe you." said Hayley, returning you to the present. "Mom would have told me."

You shook your head. "Elvira Strange ordered my secret kept silent." you said. you then threw a hand over your moth, blushing. "Oops."

Hayley immediately turned red with annoyance. "You 'knew' all along!?!" she asked you, fuming.

"Mom told me when I shared my secret with her." you said, snickering. "Sorry!"

Hayley shook her head then stomped her foot in anger as she whispered, "John Harrison....!"

"Okay!, Okay!" you said, laughing, waving your arms. "Let's do this... If I win, you keep me out of your 'fun' until after mine and Mel's birthday next week. If I lose, I show you my secret." you then, again, folded your arms, grinning. "That's the bet, take it or leave it."

What does Mel say?

You have the following choices:

1. I accept!

*Noteb*
2. No way! (leaves mad)

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
