"It's too late for me, Hayley." you told her, bowing your head.
Hayley looked at you, her concern growing. "What do you mean?"
"First of all, rewiring the entire brain from one gender to another is easy, if you know how." you told her. "All that it takes is a X chromosome catalyst to change the DNA of the brain. The transformation is almost instantaneous. However, the catalyst burns out in roughly two hours and the brain reverts back to its original gender body readjusts itself back to normal."
Hayley shook her head. "So how is rewiring part of your brain harder?"
"There is, literally, a countless number of connections inside the brain." you said. "It would take me months to find the effected area. Even then, there is no guarantee that there are numerous effected areas throughout the brain."
Hayley began to turn white as she began to understand the complexity of the problem. "So, by the time you are ready to fix the problem, you will have already changed genders." she said.
"As I said, Hayley." you told her. "It's already too late. If the brain is effected by the X chromosome catalyst too long, the body begins to change with it. So, even if I stop reading the book and stop practicing my chaotic science, I am still going to become completely female. That is, if the catalyst is still viable."
Again, Hayley shook her head. Your science was way beyond her understanding, it scared her a little.
"Viable?" she asked. she became frustrated. "Come on, John! Talk on my level for a minute!"
"I'm sorry." you said. "I told you that the catalyst burns itself out and the brain reverts back to it's original gender."
"Yeah, I got that part." said Hayley. "What about the other?"
"It's possible that the sudden change, caused by the catalyst, had shocked my brain to the point where it was not able to completely heal itself, leaving brain part male and part female. If that change does not spread, my body will remain stable, and male. I will be able to continue my studies without harm."
"If it does spread?" asked Hayley.
"If it does spread, my body will fall into a gender war. The only issue with that is the changes occur from the inside out and no one will know the outcome until they reach the outside and by then..."
"It will be all too late." finished Hayley.
You nodded. "So, for now, it's a waiting game." you said.
"A game mom is not going to want to play." thought Hayley. then she said, "Will you at least promise me to limit the use of your science?"
You looked at her for a moment then reluctantly nodded. "Yes." you said. "I believe that would be agreeable. Besides, use of my power will speed the process, either way. Better to slow it down until I can isolate the effected areas and put together a solution."
Hayley let out a low sigh of relief. "I better keep an eye on him." she thought. "Just in case."
