Chapter #4

Of adversity and close family

Room 308. First class: Remedial Italian. That's what Jesse's class schedule said. It was too bad he had to run around the entire third level to find the door. He found the room in a nook at the other end of the corridor, right where he was standing before. Could the architect have picked a spot any more secluded? It mattered not. Jesse found his class with seconds to spare. That was all that mattered.

The inside of the classroom was nothing special. It looked like an ordinary classroom with Italian words, phrases, photographs of parts of Italy, etc. It was what Jesse expected to see when he thought of an Italian course. There were about twenty-seven students in the room, including himself and Melody. The two Cartiers sat side by side together as they waited for their instructor to show up.

"Ms. Maroni," read Melody. "I guess it's only natural that we get an Italian person to teach this subject. Right, Jesse?"

Jesse said nothing.

"Jesse, it's natural to get lost on your way to classes during the first week. Why are you beating yourself up over it?"

Her brother said, "Well... this is a prestigious school, isn't it? It's kind of embarrassing to do something as stupid as that."

Melody nodded understandingly and replied, "You may have something there. However, I have a gut feeling that between now and the end of the second semester, everybody here is going to do dumber things than getting lost. Something as simple as getting lost doesn't make you stupid, especially in a school this huge. Besides, I know for a fact that you are one of the brightest people I have ever met. If you can remember every cake recipe and the names of all the world's major cities, I'm sure you can remember your way around this school. No one has a better memory than you, Jesse."

For the first time since getting separated from Melody and getting lost, Jesse smiled. "Thank you, Melody. You're also one of the nicest people I've ever met."

"Naturally," said Melody. "I am your sister. It's in my blood to comfort you. But don't get all misty-eyed on your first day here. That would make you look foolish." Melody giggled. Jesse laughed along with her. "Tell you what, bro. Come lunchtime, we'll sit outside and I'll give your feet a nice rub. Sound good?"

Jesse smiled and laughed. "Sounds good to me. Just be careful around my toes."

"I'll try," said Melody. And with that, Jesse awaited his teacher in higher spirits.
