I could tell Mom was as shocked as I was, but it seemed... different for her. And not just because she wasn't the one going through this. "I think we'd better sit down, Nancy."
"What is happening?" I asked as we sat on my bed. "How'd I grow so much in just one night?"
"You're taking after my mother."
"I don't think so, Mom. I remember Grandma Archer, and she wasn't this tall."
Mom shook her head. "Honey Archer was my stepmother. My birth mother was Nancy Archer."
"Wait a minute," I said. "Birth mother? How come I never heard about this?"
"It's best if you let me explain it," Mom replied. "You see, before I was born, my parents were young and in love. It seemed like nothing could keep them apart. Then came the event that changed everything."
She pointed out by Three Mile Point. "As I heard it, Mom and Dad were having a picnic out there, when it happened."
"What happened?"
"A meteorite. It crashed close by, and sent a fragment into my mother. The doctor patched her up, and said he wanted her to come in, if anything happened.
"It didn't take long. You see, Nancy, she started growing. A few inches at a time, at first. Once she got big enough, the growth started coming in feet. She didn't stop growing until she was 50 feet tall. Then came the big shock."
"What big shock?"
"She was pregnant. At first, she worried that the baby would be as big as she was. When that turned out not to be the case, she was positively terrified, worried that she couldn't bond with her child, or that she might accidentally crush it.
"Well, I was born to her in due time. I've been told that my birth was quite memorable for the doctor, as well."
"So," I asked, "what happened to Grandma Nancy?"
Mom shook her head. "She commited suicide, not long after I was born. She went out one night and pulled apart a transformer. We never knew exactly why. To make it all worse, some movie studio made a film out of it, changing everything but the names. Dad tried to sue, but the pinheaded judge figured that the different details made it a completely different story."
"Oh, Mom, I'm so sorry." I hugged her. Pretty easy, considering we were the same size.
Something occurred to me, and I pulled away. "Wait a minute. If Grandma was 50 feet tall,... "
Mom nodded. "I'm afraid your growth is just starting, Nancy."
