What seemed like hours later, I woke up in a dark room on something soft. A low moan escaped my lips as I stirred slightly; every inch I moved seemed like an up hill battle. I felt completely drained, no energy left in me at all. Worse, as quiet as the room was, I could not hear my own breath. "Am I dead...?" Softly, I questioned myself.
"Not quite, child." Startling me, a soft feminine voice replied. "You have been given the dark gift though we were hoping for someone other than you."
"Dark gift...?" Confused, I weakly asked. "What happened to me?"
The lights in the room brightened slightly to that of twilight and I found that I was in a cozy looking bedroom somewhere with a tall, sender young woman sitting next to the bed I was lying in. She gave me a rueful smile as I then noticed I was completely naked and blushed, still unable to really move.
"Let us take this one step at a time, child." In a strange accent, the woman said. "First, I am Umbra; it is Latin for shadow. Who might you be?"
"S- Sarah Summers." Unnerved, I replied.
Umbra nodded. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance." Courtly, she said. "As for your question, to be blunt, my associates and I have turned you into a vampire."
My eyes went wide as Umbra smiled, flashing two long, pearl white sharp fangs. I wanted to jump away but I did not have the energy to do anything but lay there, trembling. Umbra gave a short giggle, her grin turning slightly more kind as she offered me her hand. Frightened, I slowly took her hand and she helped me up into a sitting position.
"Why- Why am I so weak...?" Tearing up, I demanded. "Why can't I feel anything...?"
"Your strength and sense of touch will return to you in spades soon enough, child." Softly, Umbra replied. "As I said, we were expecting someone else; a boy from your small city but something had delayed him."
"And you got me instead." Softly, I said. "I see..."
"Anyone else, we would have drained dry and left for the wolves." Darkly, Umbra said. "However, you are unique somehow."
"What do you mean?" Wincing, I asked.
"One step at a time, child." Softly, Umbra replied. "I will allow you to take in what you have learned so far while I bring you some clothing and something to... drink."
She then smiled again before rising from her chair and walked out of the dark room, closing the door behind her...
