Chapter #2

Tom Graves

Hey there, I'm Tom Graves, but I prefer that you just call me Tom. You know, life can be really random sometimes, you know? Like how something perfectly normal is happening, and something super crazy happens right afterwards. Well, my story is kind of like that, only difference is that there's a bigger emphasis on the term "crazy". You could say that something happened to me. Something that completely changed my world point of view. And believe me, it's never gonna be the same again...

It all started on that day. It was the beginning of summer, where I woke up around 9 a.m. or so in the morning. I live with my mom and dad, along with Scott, my little brother, and my dog Rex. Although Scott seems to have a habit of calling him Rexxy, I'm sure it's perfectly normal. He's only like 6 or something. Anyway, I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock, which I've gotten used to setting every night. I said good morning to Rex, who I always keep in my room. He's a healthy Labrador Retriever, in case you were wondering. And of course, he barked up at me and gave my face a bath with his tongue. I was on my way to the shower for a real bath when I started feeling a little itchy. It wasn't anything bad, because it felt like one of those occasional itches that everyone gets every once in a while. But the thing was, wherever I scratched, it came back somewhere else. I wasn't really worried or anything, but I hurried a little to the shower, just in case.

While I was bathing, I was really relieved to find the itch was gone. Maybe Rex was starting to get flees? Hope not. Bathing him is a real hassle. Anyway, funny thing about what happened while I was shampooing my hair. I couldn't help but notice my hair seemed a little longer than I remember when I went to bed last night. It was weird, I admit, or maybe it's just a case of a faulty memory? Nah. After my shower, I was brushing my teeth to get rid of that morning breath. That was when I found something that started to creep me out a little. It was my teeth. My canines, to be exact. They were a little longer, and maybe even a little more pointed than before. Or maybe it was just the mirror playing tricks on me. Yeah, that's gotta be it.

Anyway, I still can't help but feel that something was really off about me today. It could just be my serves, since I've been so excited for summer vacation this year. I went back to my room to spend a little play time with Rex before breakfast. And that was when I knew that something really weird is going on around here. When I opened the door, Rex bounded up to me like he always does, but then he stopped right in front of me. That's never happened before.

"Hey, what's wrong Rex?" I asked.

But he didn't move. He didn't even reply in anyway. No bark, no growl, no yelp, no nothing. He just stood there with his tail between his legs, like he was...Afraid of me.

"Rex? What's the matter? It's me, Tom! Your friend, remember?"

I tried to get a little closer, and he suddenly ran under the bed. I was starting to panic a little bit, but I tried to keep a calm face the whole time. I had to lie down to see him under the bed, cowering in the shadows.

"Rex! It's me, Tom! Please come out! You're starting to scare me!"

I wanted to find someway to make him come out. Rex has never done anything like this before, ever! I went to my table, where I would always keep his favorite chew toy on top of it. When I grabbed it, I saw something even weirder. I keep a hand mirror on the side of the table, and the reflection was what I found weird. In case you're wondering, I got that mirror as a birthday present from one of my aunts, okay? Anyway, I picked up the mirror and saw myself, only it didn't seem like myself to me. My hair was longer by at least half an inch, my canines were even sharper, and worst of all, were my eyes. They didn't seem human anymore. My pupils were slits, like an animal's! Now I know why he was afraid of me! It was because I don't even look like myself anymore! My first thought was to find the reason why I was turning into this...thing, but first thing's first. I have to convince Rex that I'm still me. I rushed back to my bed and held out the chew toy, making sure that my face was out of sight.

"Here Rex, I've got your favorite chew toy! Come on, I won't hurt you, I promise!"

At first, I wasn't sure that this was gonna work, but he slowly came out and saw me.

"Don't be afraid Rex. It's me, Tom. I won't hurt you, and I never will, okay?"

He sniffed my hand a little before he took the toy out of my hand. I petted him a bit, just to help make him feel better. It took a few minutes before he was convinced that I was still myself. I felt glad for that.

"I'm sorry for scaring you like that. I don't know what happened. But I'm gonna look for an answer, and everything will be back to the way it was. Alright?"

He licked my face a couple times and hugged me. I definitely needed that. Little did I know that everything won't be going back to normal that easily. What happened next was a knock at my door, which I really hated, since I was having a moment with my dog here. Anyway, it was...
