Chapter #3

The Big Family Secret

"Tom, aren't you going down for dinner?" he asked.

"Uh, I'm just spending some time with Rex here, that's all!" I called back.

"Tom, you know that everyone has to be at the dinner table whenever we have our meals. Come on out already."

"But dad, I-I'm a little busy in here!"

"Busy with what?"

"U-uh...Personal stuff!"

"...Is it anything you can discuss with your old man?"

"Um...Uh, it's a little, er...Complicated."

"...Tom, I respect your privacy by knocking and talking to you through the door, but as your parent, I'm worried about you, so I'm coming in anyway."

Crud! The first thing that came to mind was to hide, so I jumped into my bed covers and hid my head underneath. I heard the door creak open as my father walked into the room.

"Tom, if there's any problem you have, I'm here if you ever wanna talk about it."

"You don't understand! See, I'm, uh...Changing."

"Changing?"

"Y-yeah...Please understand, but something weird is happening to me and..."

I couldn't finish my sentence. It felt like the words refused to come out of my mouth. But it didn't matter anyway, as dad pulled the covers off of me and saw what I looked like. I just stared back at him, afraid of how he was gonna react. But what he did was like the opposite of what I thought he was going to do! He just sat there on the edge of the bed and looked at me in the eye.

"Son, I think it's about time I told you something about my side of the family."

At first, I was pretty surprised that he was perfectly calm with all of this. I just sat up and listened to what he told me.

"You see Tom, my side of the family isn't what you would call normal. You see, it's a little hard to explain, but...Well, our bloodline contains latent werewolf blood."

"Wait...Did you just say werewolf blood? As in those man-eating monsters of the night werewolves?"

"Yes, but that description's actually a little stereotypical. You see, every generation gives birth to a werewolf child, but only the first born receives this gift. These people will begin to turn into their true forms once they come of age. My guess is it's about your time now."

"So let me get this straight. We have an entire family who's first borns, including me, are all werewolves!?"

"That's right son. Your mother already knows this, so you don't have to hide it from her. But try not to scare your brother, alright?"

"D-dad! What am I gonna do!? This means that I'm gonna turn into a snarling, blood-thirsty monster every full moon!"

"Now calm down. That's just another movie stereotype the media invented. You keep all of your memories and sanity while you're transformed, and you don't need a full moon to transform either. You can actually change no matter what time of the day it is, but you will change on full moon nights."

"Hey, how do you know all this?"

"Why, I lived with my older brother for years until I moved out, remember?"

"Oh yeah, uncle Daniel. No wonder his Halloween costume was so scary two years ago."

"There, see? There's nothing to worry about Tom. Once your body has finished changing, you'll learn to turn back human soon afterwards."

"Thanks dad. I'm really glad you explained all this to me."

I hugged him, thinking about what he told me, and he hugged me back. When we broke, my dad told me that I can have breakfast in bed, just for today so I don't have to see Scott and accidentally scare him. As he closed the door, Rex jumped up on to me. I was glad he wasn't scared of me. I petted him a bit more, when my hands started getting all twitchy. I looked at them as these patches of hair...Fur...Whatever were growing on it! The hair, I mean fur, was a darkish brown in colour, and they were slowly spreading up to my wrists! Not only that, but my fingernails were growing longer and sharper, growing over my fingertips and making them look like claws! I looked at my palms as parts of them, along with this side of my fingers, were turning black and leathery, like the foot pads of a dog! The changes suddenly stopped at my wrists. My forearms were still human, but it looked like I had wolf paws for hands! Well, I'm not really sure if I can call them paws, because I still have opposable thumbs. I looked back at Rex, sitting in front of me. He wasn't scared really, but more like...Um, concerned is the closest word I can think of.

"Don't worry Rex. Once this is all over, I can just change back into the Tom you used to know."

He nuzzled my head a little as I stroked his back. I was really hopeful that this wasn't going to take too long to finish. I just wanted my old life back...
