Visit Betty Edwards

    by: GeminiKC Author IconMail Icon
It was a little after 11 o'clock at night when Betty heard the buzzer sound, indicating that someone had entered to lobby of the motel. Glancing over at the couch, she saw her husband, Roger, lying there, completely oblivious to the sound of the buzzer that alerted them when someone entered the lobby. As usual, he had been drinking quite heavily earlier in the evening and was now passed out on the couch. It would be highly unlikely that he would stir from the couch until sometime tomorrow morning. Pushing herself up from the large easy chair she had been seated in, she tugged on the belt of the housecoat she was wearing, making sure it was securely tied around her waist, then proceeded out to the lobby.

A somewhat portly black man with a receding hairline stood at the counter, looking at a small pamphlet which advertised various businesses in Ravenswood and the surrounding area. When he saw Betty enter the lobby, he looked up at her and smiled.

"Can I help you?" queried Betty, as she looked him over, then allowed her eyes to meet his. Without really thinking about what she was doing, she found herself guessing that he was probably around 45 or 50 years old.

"I need a room for the week," he said, his eyes darting to the neckline of her robe before returning to her face. "I stopped at Fort Wheeler where I'm going to be working but, they don't have any guest facilities yet and they suggested I try either you or go to Canyon Falls."

"All our singles are occupied I'm afraid," she said, checking the registry quickly. "But, we do have a double with a queen sized bed available, if that's okay? It is a little more expensive than a single though."

"That's fine," replied the man, reaching to his hip pocket and pulling out his wallet. "I'm traveling alone but, a room with a queen sized bed sounds perfect."

Verifying his identity with his driver's license, Betty had him register and used his credit card as a security deposit. Handing him the keys to the room, she told him about the small cafe which was just down the street, where he would be able to get breakfast or any other meal. Thanking her, the man picked up the keys and walked to the door.

"Ah...I'm sorry....there is one other thing." he said, turning back in her direction. "I don't suppose there's any place in town where I can get something to drink, is there?"

"Well, there is a liquor store a few blocks from here, if that's what you mean," she replied, quickly looking up at the clock. "But, I'm afraid it's closed by now and won't be open until 10 in the morning. There's a convenience store on the other end of town that has beer and wine but, they're closed by now also."

"Damn! I was afraid of that." replied the man, his face taking on a disappointed look. "I usually have a good stiff belt before I go to bed....helps me sleep."

"I'm sorry," responded Betty, trying to sound sympathetic to his needs. "I wish there was something I could do."

"That's okay, not your fault." replied the man as he opened the door and went out to his car.

Standing in the lobby, Betty watched as the man moved his car, then disappeared into his room. Turning off the "vacancy" sign in front of the motel, she locked the front door, turned off the lights and went back into their living quarters, which adjoined the motel lobby.

Entering the room, she saw Roger had not moved from where he laid on the couch. As she had surmised earlier, he was out for the night. She thought about trying to wake him up. For some strange reason, when she had been talking to the man in the lobby, she had found herself becoming somewhat sexually aroused. It had been more than a month since Roger had had sex with her and she was more than a little horny.

"Hell, he wouldn't be able to give me what I need even if I could wake him up." she thought, her frustration growing as she stared at her husband. "I'd love it if just once, he's screw the shit out of me like he did before we were married."

Picking up a blanket which laid on the armrest of the couch, she covered Roger with it, walked over and turned off the television, then went into the kitchen, turning off the lights as she left the room. She was thinking about what the man had said about needing a drink or two to help him sleep.

"Hell, Roger's always got a good supply of booze," she thought as she walked over to the cupboards near the kitchen sink. "He wouldn't miss one bottle if I gave it to a customer. I'll just give it to him, no charge, that's not illegal."

Opening one of the cupboards, she looked at the various bottles of liquor inside, suddenly realizing that she didn't have a clue as to which kind the man might prefer. Reaching up, she took a bottle of bourbon from the shelf and placed it on the counter.

"This might not be such a good idea," she thought as she stood staring at the full bottle of bourbon. "How's it going to look with me showing up at one of the rooms at nearly one in the morning with a bottle of booze in my hand?"

She stood in the kitchen, mulling over whether she should take the bottle over to the man or should she just put it back in the cupboard and go to bed.

"I'm just going to take him the bottle." she thought, trying to rationalize her decision. "I'm not going to go over there and have a party with him. What's the harm in that? And if he pays me for it, we make a little extra money and he gets his drink before he goes to bed. Nothing wrong with that."
