"Oh, come now, surely you don't think me that stupid?" Esmerda said, startling Eric out of his thoughts. She can read my mind!
"Wha? Did eyou say something?" The other dragon head formerly known as Brian asked.
Eric nodded his head no, and looked up at the imposing figure blocking their escape. She smiled again, this time outright evilly. "Reading your hatchling's minds is one of a mother's greatest parenting tools, wouldn't you agree?" She stopped smiling and stared directly at him. "And I do not smile, 'evilly.'" Something about her gaze triggered something in his new body's psyche, for Eric was compelled to apologize to her. "...Please, please don't hurt me," he felt his mouth say, in utter disregard for his free will, not to mention the fact that his instincts could speak perfect human.
Esmerda's gaze softened, satisfied. "Good. I'm glad you aren't at least as stupid as you were a few days ago." She moved in close.
"Ah, no!" Brian said, recoiling in horror. He started scrambling wildly to get away, and Eric decided that he had a good idea. The two of them moved as quickly as their little legs could take them, towards the back of the cage. Behind them, still close enough for her breath to reach them, they heard mild chuckling. "Humans are so amusing at this stage," she remarked.
Suddenly, out of the sky a claw appeared, blocking their path. "Now, now, don't use up all your energy for your first meal on running away," she said.
Eric stood in defiance for a moment, hoping to somehow will her claw to move out of the way, but he was interrupted when Brian turned them around to face their protector, no oppressor.
