I glanced in the looking glass as Shaska, my maiden, soothed the last of my rebellious dark hair around the braided gold circlet on my head. I had hair the colour of ravens wings - many had said that it was as dark as the night. Tears slipped down my bronzed cheeks from blue eyes. Those lily coloured eyes had been the cause of much wooing from nobles in the past, as much as I hated it, but today the lily had turned to a sea of tears. It was not everyday that my good father, the great king of all Palistia, died. Now tears flowed freely. Nothing in Palistia would ever be the same again.
I smoothed my blue silk dress, the colour of mourning in Palistia, rose gracefully and walked to the door. I was followed by a train of maidens, also in mourning blue. Philip, my faithful guard, fell in step behind me and my maids respectfully distanced themselves from him. The palace at Susawa was the greatest in Palistia. Great marble pillars flanking the hallway towered high into the roof. Windows as tall as three men on top of each other stood proud on my right - this was only a small corridor in a small wing of the majestic palace.
We swept past the pillars and windows, across the glassy surface until we came to a stairway. My mind was dull with grief and anxiety. My brother was now the King of Palistia, yet he was young - only sixteen summers - and inexperienced in this dangerous world. He knew more than me, his little fifteen-year-old sister, but I knew that we were both in a very dangerous situation. We had not been able to speak privately together since our father's death, but I was sure he thought the same as me: our father was murdered.
We reached the foot of the staircase and I paused as Medrek stepped out from beside a pillar and approached. He was the only person left in the world apart from my brother whom I trusted. Standing six feet five, he could be rather intimidating with his massive bulk, but he had kind eyes and a gentle face.
"Mara." He was one of few in the kingdom who could call me that. I liked the way my name rolled off his tongue, but I brushed such thoughts aside. He was serious. He wanted my attention. "May I speak to you about something?"
