I thought a moment about Medrek's offer, gazing out over the massive white city of Susawa, to the west where the sun was sinking low on the horizon. Flee the palace! Leave my home! Abandon the throne! But I knew Medrek was right. "Has my brother agreed?" I asked.
"Yes."
I nodded slowly in acceptation. Medrek was right. I must go with him. My loyalty lay with my brother, Medrek, my country, the memory of my father. "Yes, I will go."
"Very well. We have little time. We leave immediately. When we leave this room, you must order all except one of your servants to stay where they are. Is your guard reliable?"
"Yes, Philip is loyal to me until death. He has saved my life before and that is why my father made him my personal guard."
"Order him to follow you. Let me do everything else."
I nodded, stood up, my silk dress gathering coolly on my skin.
He followed me to the door, opened it and I proceeded him out. Doing as he had advised, I told my servants to stay where they were and ordered Philip to follow me. He did so gladly. Faithful Philip! He would never leave me, even if it cost him his life!
We turned up another corridor and I slowed down to step in behind Medrek. Philip raised an eyebrow at this submission - after all, I was a princess, the only daughter of the great king Mashania of Philistia - but did not comment.
I thought I knew the palace well, but Medrek led us up and down so many corridors and staircases that even I was confused and hopelessly lost. I was very thankful that I was with these two men. I knew they were faithful and I could trust them. I longed to see my brother, Azad, to embrace him and to speak to him. He was all I had left, now.
