Chapter #4

Doubts

    by: Unknown
Tia stared out over the farmlands. She could see for miles from her perch on the tower's roof. The door inside slammed open, and she pulled her feet higher up. She rested her chin on her knees and closed her eyes, knowing that it would be Christopher. And it was. He leaned out the window and stared up at her, his blond hair ruffling in the wind.

"Tia?"

His voice was deep and melancholy. She sighed and glanced at him quickly before continuing to study the land. Her green eyes sparkled as tears began to fill them, and she hid her face in her dress. Christopher paused a moment, doubt flickering in his mind, before climbing on to the roof next to Tia. They'd grown up together in the farmlands. Tia had always been willing to run and play with the boys, and Christopher had always been willing to let her. They were best friends and, as a result, he knew she was terrified and didn't want to go through with any of it.

"What's wrong?" he asked quietly.

She was silent, her shoulders shaking with sobs. After a few minutes she breathed in deeply and looked at him. A strand of curly brown hair escaped from its braid and fluttered around her face before she tucked it back in.

"Do you remember tha farmlands?" she whispered. He nodded. "All the other girls would stare at me, call me silly or stupid, because I didn't want to be a princess. And they did. Why couldn't they have come to the castle and looked after the king's children? Why did he choose me? And why do I have to do this now? I don't want to."

They sat in silence again, Christopher unable to think of an answer that would comfort her, and Tia preparing herself for the impossible task of being princess. She stood suddenly, spread her arms and let the wind hold her for a moment, before climbing off of the roof and back into the castle's tower, where the prince's men were waiting to accompany her back to Agui.
