Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the priest open a hidden side door. He ushered my maids through as I ran towards it.
As I ran into the semi-darkness of the passageway, I noticed him grab a pike, the sacred weapon of our realms priests. The door slammed shut behind me, and I followed my maids towards the exit. The passage was stone, and it was just tall enough to fit an average human. My father's sorcerer had equipped the walls with magic torches that burned eternally.
We reached a crossroads of other secret passages. A web of intricate tunnels ran through the castle. My ancestors commissioned them for an attack like this one.
The passage on the left would take us to pub in the town, owned by one of my father's most trusted citizens. The center one led right to the center of the palace. The passage on the right was dangerous, but it led to a secret tree in the ancient, impenetrable Dark Forest next to the kingdom.
We turned left to exit the safest passage. Suddenly, voices echoed from that direction. I knew they weren't allies like I knew my father was murdered.
