The next morning, Rose mounted Midnight again and continued down to where the capital city of Demaria lay. She had to go slowly on the steep track going down, but once she reached the plains around the city, she cantered all the way to the city gate. Blending in with traders, villagers, and other travelers, Rose had no problem getting into Demaria, but she looked up worriedly towards the castle at the center of the city. Already the sky was beginning to darken. The king would hardly be receiving anyone at night. Rose tried to hasten, but try as she might, Midnight could not move very fast in the crowds and alleys of the city.
The stars were beginning to show by the time Rose drew up outside the castle walls. She leaped off her horse, sparing a few seconds to rub Midnight's nose. Then she walked up to the broad doors and looked around, unsure what to do. "Hello?" she called. Suddenly a small slit in the door opened and two eyes peered out.
"Yes? What do you require at the king's gate?"
"Please, I would like to speak to the king," she said, hoping she didn't sound too uncouth or desperate. There was silence for a few seconds.
"I am afraid that is not possible." The slit slid closed before she could respond.
"Please?" she asked forlornly, not sure if anyone could even here her.
